Collider recently sat down with Chris Columbus, the man behind the some of the most beloved films from the 80’s and early 90’s, to discuss the upcoming Gremlins reboot, which is being penned by Carl Ellsworth, as well as the sequel to the 1985 action/adventure Goonies.
Discussing the new Gremlins, Columbus confirmed that it’s actually happening and stated:
Okay, we can do this. We can actually find a way not to remake the first movie, but to take those characters and do something interesting.
He further stated that an important feeling that he thought the film should convey was a sense of nostalgia, adding, “…if we can create that feeling but deliver something new to the audience, then maybe we can do a really terrific Gremlins reboot.”
When it comes to the oft-mentioned Goonies sequel, things haven’t made nearly as much progress. Columbus states that a sequel, “…is a much tougher nut to crack for obvious reasons. It actually comes up about every five years. We’re in the thick of it now trying to figure it out.”
Personally, I’d be very interested to see a Goonies sequel as the original holds up extremely well and is just one of those incredibly entertaining movies that everyone should see.
However, when it comes to Gremlins, I’m very nervous. It’s not that I don’t want to return to that world. It’s just that I’m really nervous that they’re going to open up with a scene of Gizmo dying of old age. After all, it’s been over 30 years since the original. If that happens, part of my soul will wither away. I had a Gizmo plush as a kid and that thing went everywhere with me. I don’t think I could handle it.
