Director Roland Emmerich tweeted that Maika Monroe, who played Jay in this year’s It Follows, has signed on to appear in Independence Day 2. While his tweet offered little extra information, The Hollywood Reporter went into further detail to explain that she will be playing the daughter of the President of the United States, reprised by Bill Pullman.
The site also adds:
Roland Emmerich is directing the project, which has a mix of old and new faces: Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jessie Usher are joining the cast, while Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch are reprising their roles from the 1994 original.
We exclusively learned the details of the plot, which read:
Independence Day 2, which we also learned is being dubbed ID Forever, takes place 20 years after the 1996 films in which aliens attacked Earth. In the follow up, alien reinforcements come to Earth 20 years after a distress call was sent out by the first wave of extraterrestrials.
The film is set for a summer 2016 release.
