When a franchise has been around as long as Resident Evil has, there’s going to be some scuff marks on its legacy. If you were to look at the series’ timeline since its debut in 1996 to today, with all its highs and all its lows, arguably the highest high came in 2005, with the release of Resident Evil 4. That game changed everything. Its impact on video games and especially the third person genre are still felt today, but it’s the changes it had on the series that’s divided fans.
The problem is, for as great and as revolutionary as it was at the time, many people can’t help but see it as the game that led us to one of the most polarizing games in the franchise, Resident Evil 5, as well as one of the most disappointing entries in the main series, with Resident Evil 6.
If you can set that point of contention aside for just six minutes, do that. This way you can better enjoy this new video from YouTuber Mark Brown, who recently featured Resident Evil 4 in his “Game Maker’s Toolkit” series. Watching it might help you understand one of the reasons why this game was so innovative, and why it’s still one of my all-time favorite games today.
Once you’re finished, I’d appreciate it if you would share your experience with RE4, and specifically what you liked or didn’t like about it, in the comments below.
