Capcom keeps on winning. They’ve announced that their return to the Onimusha series in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, surpassed 1 million units sold on the first day of its release. As a result, cumulative sales of the Onimusha series have now surpassed 10 million units.
That might not seem like a lot, but you have to consider the last major title in the series was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which was released back in 2006 for the PlayStation 2.
In the press release, Capcom credits their marketing initiatives prior to the launch of Way of the Sword, which included multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions, which no doubt helped to push the one million units on the day of its release.
And once again, much like what happened after the release of 2024’s Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, Capcom is reiterating its goal of “re-activating IPs” that have been dormant for some time. “The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including [Onimusha].”
Does this mean that long-suffering Dino Crisis fans will finally get their moment in the sun? One hopes that will be the case.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword transports players to a twisted vision of Kyoto. Set during Japan’s Edo period, the game features real-life locations, local myths, and historical figures within a dark fantasy world. Among the cast of characters is protagonist Miyamoto Musashi, a fierce and striking young samurai, who today we now know as one of the most legendary figures in Japanese history.
In the game, Musashi’s path takes an unexpected turn after a run in with the demonic Genma. He soon finds himself armed with an Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants abilities beyond human limits. While this power allows Musashi to slay these monsters from the underworld, he desires to fight with his strength alone. In his quest, he’ll face many gritty, blood-soaked brawls.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series, the Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
