Some fairy tales are better served in small packages. At least that’s what Paramount seems to think as they’ve apparently scrapped plans for a sequel to 2013’s action fantasty/horror Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and are instead seeking out ways to turn the story into a TV series through their own Paramount TV division.
This news, which comes from Deadline, is rather surprising as only a few months ago we reported that the sequel had a new director in the form of Bruno Aveillan. Additionally, the original film, while not ever popular in the States, was incredibly well received overseas, generating around $170 million in foreign markets.
I personally loved the first film, which starred Gemma Arteron and Jeremy Renner in the title roles, and the thought of a sequel was something I found myself really excited for. While this news is disappointing, maybe a TV series is a good place to take this? It’ll allow for loads more witch hunting and possibly even other kinds of fantastical creatures getting blown up rather violently. I guess we’ll just have to see what comes next, eh?
