Yawpers Release Wicked Video for “Doing It Right”

Published

on

Colorado’s Yawpers are an interesting group, to say the least. They take stylings of Americana Blues and hammer it in the face with some punk aggression, creating a blend that is packed full of energy, swagger, and addictive charisma.

I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical when I was approached to cover their video for “Doing It Right”, which appears on the upcoming album American Man, but I’m beyond glad that I gave it a chance! Packed with gore, violence, and incredibly solid production work, the video is something I enjoyed the hell out of and it’s absolutely worth sharing here with all of you.

Below you can see the video as well as read an exclusive quote. And definitely make sure to see if they’re coming to your neck of the woods!

You can pre-order your copy of American Man via Bloodshot Records.

Vocalist/guitarist Nate Cook exclusively tells BD all about the video:

We spent quite a bit of time trying to set up the video, considering we had two days to film and a shoestring budget. I wrote and directed the video and had a ton of production help from Graham Hill and Kevin Hu from Ideascape.

I wanted to just make a pretty straight revenge piece with a supernatural and violent streak. I was kind of pulling from Falling Down, I Spit on Your Grave, and Sam Raimi’s work. Obviously, we had fun with our choice of victims: the Westboro analogue, the dog abuser, the double parker. It was also fulfilling to make the antagonist a sadistic corporate shill, and force him to be the only one to kill himself.

On the production side, we had an incredibly busy schedule that honestly couldn’t have been done without the team we had. In two days we shot at eight locations that were spread across 200 miles. Obviously, with the low budget, we couldn’t afford any permits, so we shot as fast as we could, and bailed.

Obviously the end seen was shot with a drone, which was such a blast. It was also incredibly dangerous, as all the actors did their own driving with no training or experience. And I will say, they pushed it to the point of actually making everyone nervous.

Our guy on effects and make up was phenomenal, the editing went quick, and we just had such a great group of people that allowed us to pull this thing off. In the end, it’s pretty close to what we wanted: violent, irreverent, and fun.

This Tempting Madness clip

A hospital stay grows more nerve-frazzling when memory loss distorts reality in our exclusive clip from This Tempting Madness, inspired by a true story.

The mind-bending psychological thriller will be released in select theaters and on demand on June 12 via Vertical.

Simone Ashley (“Bridgerton”) stars as Mia, who awakens from a coma, grievously injured, her memory fractured. As she puts the pieces of her past together, she starts to question her own actions and her perception of reality.

In This Tempting Madness, “Mia awakens from a coma grievously injured, her memory fractured. As she puts the pieces of her past together, she starts to question her own actions, and her perception of reality.”

Jennifer E. Montgomery makes her feature directorial debut from a script she co-wrote with director of photography Andrew Davis, inspired by Montgomery’s first-hand experience with tragedy involving her best friend.

“Months before the incident, there were signals that her world was unraveling,” says Montgomery. “I could feel the pressure building, though I didn’t know what form it would take. I never could have known what violence would come, and I certainly never imagined making a film about it.”

Austin Stowell (“NCIS: Origins”), Suraj Sharma (Happy Death Day 2U), Mojean Aria (Reminiscence), Amol Shah (“For All Mankind”), and Zenobia Shroff (“Ms. Marvel”) round out the cast.

Smoke Jumper Films and Mango Monster Productions produce in association with Catchlight Studios (HereticThe Blackening).

This Tempting Madness is rated R for “language, violence/bloody images, and brief sexuality.”
