Did you hear that? It’s coming from the basement. Hey, I have an idea — how about you go investigate that strange wailing we’re both definitely hearing, and I’ll stay here so I can keep an eye on that blood-colored teddy bear, on the off chance it suddenly sprouts antlers, catches fire and starts chasing me with a hammer.
That’s the first part of my one man play inspired by the genuinely frightening psychological horror game Layers of Fear. This game was plenty scary already, and now it’s even more frightening thanks to a free content update that rolled out earlier this week, bringing with it some additional polish and a new room that can be found in the basement.
Like the flesh sacks we call our bodies, all of this is temporary. A month from now, it’ll feel like it was a dream. However, Bloober Team is giving players an opportunity to be immortalized in the game. All you need to do is “find all of the unique effects connected with the key words,” and even then, only the first three people to do that will be rewarded with an in-game portrait of themselves.
Layers of Fear is available now on Steam Early Access for $12.99. As of a week ago, it also made its way to the Xbox One, via the console’s Preview program.
