‘The Tape’ Reveal Trailer Evokes ‘The Ring’

This reveal trailer for The Tape doesn’t waste any time getting weird. It’s strange enough and edited in such a way that it resembles that tape from The Ring that takes a whole week to murder anyone who’s dumb enough to watch it. I have no idea if it resembles the game it’s trying to sell, but it is memorable, and that’s important when you’re competing against dozens of indie developers who are looking to get the word out about their own spooky projects.

The Tape is being developed by Kazakov Oleg, creator of Putrefaction, a horror-themed shooter that released on Steam back in August.

With “found footage stylization, slow pace and creepy atmosphere,” Oleg isn’t relying on cheap scares to get our attention. It follows a detective who’s tasked with finding a missing girl. My favorite thing about this game comes from its Steam description where it lists “Uncover the truth or at least try to escape” as a feature.

As far as player goals go, that’s setting the bar low enough that I’m confident I’ll be able to reach it. Will I escape? Probably not. Will I make an escape attempt? Sure, probably.
