Mads Mikkelsen Thinks “Hannibal” May Dine Again…And Soon

Published

on

The past several days has seen a flurry of “Hannibal” news, ranging from a preview of Brian Reitzell’s season 3 score to a view of the “Fannibals”, all in support of the season 3 home video release, which came out yesterday. As such, many interviews have been appearing online with the various cast and crew that made the show possible and each are offering their thoughts and memories on the series that drew critical acclaim but was, apparently, simply not meant to be.

However, instead of focusing solely on the past, Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the title character, offered a glimmer of hope regarding a potential fourth season in an interview with IGN.

I guess it’s one of those things that it might be… it might happen. But I also think that it has to happen fairly soon, because in three or four years, it might not be there anymore, the energy; The urge to do it from all kind of people and from the fans. So if it happens, it’s got to happen in the next year, I guess. That’s all up to what people are doing and what Bryan is doing. Is there anyone who wants to pick it up and so on… So there have been a lot of rumors and so far, nothing has happened. You know, if it does happen, I think that all of us who were involved would try very hard to be a part of it. If it doesn’t happen, I think we’re all very, very pleased that we got three wonderful seasons with a show that was so radical and so interesting that it was kind of a shock that it was picked up in the first place. So we’re kind of grateful that we stopped at a peak before it got tired. So either way it goes, I think we’ll embrace it.

Meanwhile, show creator Bryan Fuller tells our own Kalyn Corrigan, “I would love to see Hannibal in ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and see Mads Mikkelsen with Clarice Starling, and as long as I’m alive, I’ll still be trying to do that.” Explaining that Will Graham’s character also isn’t done yet, he continues, “I still feel like the most interesting chapter of Will Graham’s life has yet to be told. Just like, he’s on the other side of it. Like, everything we’ve experienced so far has been on the other side of a wall for him, and the next chapter of his story is on the other side of the wall, so it just feels like there’s great opportunity to explore that psychologically.

We all know that dead projects have suddenly come back to life with an almost roaring, fast-paced energy, nearly blindsiding and shocking us. I desperately hope that becomes the case with “Hannibal”. A continuation would be the ultimate gift as we might then dive into the most famous Hannibal story of them all.

Kate O'Flynn Widow's Bay episode 8 "Your Baggage"
Kate O’Flynn in "Widow’s Bay," now streaming on Apple TV.

As the inaugural season of Apple TV+’s stellar new seriesWidow’s Baybarrels toward its finale in two weeks, the latest episode gives Kate O’Flynn the spotlight as her character revisits her trauma with the Boogeyman.

Your Baggage“, directed by Andrew DeYoung (Friendship), sees O’Flynn’s scene-stealing Patricia once again renew her fight with the Michael Myers-like stalker that slaughtered her peers during her adolescence. Thrillingly, it makes for one extended chase sequence that sees Patricia trying to warn others, while evading the undead killer.

In short, this episode’s incredible riff on Halloween and the slasher subgenre transformed Patricia into a fierce Final Girl.

Well, that felt like a bucket list that I didn’t know was on my bucket list until I did it, but when I did it, I just lapped up every minute,O’Flynn tells Bloody Disgusting of her triumphant turn this episode. It felt fantastic for her to get that moment where she is becoming a badass. That was amazing.”

The actress turned to a few notable references for her performance.Horror-wise, I go back to my youth, which was referenced in some of the episodes: Wicker Man, Carrie, and Rosemary’s Baby, that sort of thing is my kind of vibe.”

O’Flynn also notes how the series’ unique tone allows for so much creative freedom to make bold swings. There’s something very freeing about it. Every moment is up for grabs, so it’s like we don’t have to totally land in one direction or another. It keeps it alive.

Patricia is the eccentric assistant to Matthew Rhys Mayor Tom Loftis, who’s at the forefront of trying to solve the island’s pesky curse predicament. Rhys felt the same aboutWidow’s Bayand its rare ability to make you laugh and scream in equal measure, stemming from series creator Katie Dippold.

The mandate was, ‘It’s a real world with real people. You play for real.’ There’s no playing for comedy or horror,” Rhys echoes O’Flynn’s sentiments on how freeing the series’ tone has been.

New episodes will release every Wednesday through June 17 only on Apple TV+.
