The 80’s was a magical decade for horror. There were some absolute gems that emerged from those years, many of which were, and still are, prime examples of over-the-top gore, violence, and excess, which doesn’t change the fact that they’re fun as hell and some of the most enjoyable films that the genre has to offer.
But not all films were created by major studios and got a wide release. Such was the case for Spookies, the 1986 indie zombie horror film that got a limited theater run in ’87 and ’88 and was a staple on the USA Network from ’88 through ’91. The film is remembered fondly for its copious use of practical effects and incredibly odd story, which includes a witch with a glowing brain, a cat-man, a grizzled sorcerer, and many more oddities. No, I’m not joking, it’s that batshit crazy.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this movie, Terror Vision is releasing the beloved soundtrack, which was composed by James Calabrese and Kenneth Higgins, on limited edition vinyl (god, it looks gorgeous) and cassette tape. And to help Terror Vision with this celebration, we’ve got our hands on the exclusive track premiere of “Zombie Theme (End Credit Music)”, which you can hear below.
Ryan Graveface of Terror Vision tells BD, “I was lucky enough to convince the composer to hunt for the original tapes and, once found, begged him to allow me to release it. The soundtrack kicks fucking ass.”
