Director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Leon: The Professional) is in the middle of production on his return to epic sci-fi filmmaking, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The $200 million space opera adventure film is due to hit theaters next July and packs a pretty interesting cast. Today an on-set featurette, mostly centered around female lead Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad, Paper Towns), was released for the project. You can find below, along with a handful of recently-released stills from the production. As a massive fan of The Fifth Element (as well as some of his other films), I’d love to see him making movies like this more often, so here’s hoping Valerian will prove to be as successful for Besson as Lucy was.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 21st, 2017. Based on the classic French comic series “Valerian and Laureline“, this sci-fi epic is directed by Luc Besson, from a screenplay by Besson and longtime collaborator Robert Mark Kamen. It stars Dane DeHaan as ‘Valerian’, Cara Delevingne as ‘Laureline’, and Clive Owen as ‘Commander Arun Filitt’. Ethan Hawke, Rihanna, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, Herbie Hancock, and Kris Wu also appear.
