It was only a matter of time before we heard from God of War, but I don’t suspect anyone was expecting the inevitable reunion with our old pal Kratos to feel quite like this. My experience with the series thus far has mostly been a bloody maelstrom of broken bones, lost cities and ancient creatures inspired by Greek mythology. Much of this has been left behind as the series made the jump to the PS4 with a decidedly different direction in mind that appears to be, among other things, a story about a legendary — and obviously exhausted — badass who’s trying to teach his son how to survive in a world that’s still lousy with monsters.
After dedicating a trilogy to his gruesome revenge plot against those jerks in Olympus, God of War is shifting its focus to a more human side of the infamous antihero that we’ve really only been able to catch glimpses of in flashbacks. With Father’s Day just around the corner, here’s a video that will either make you appreciate your own dad more, or make you sad you never had the chance to fight mythological monsters alongside him. Maybe both.
Do you think Kratos feels naked without those chains wrapped around his arms? I never thought to imagine Kratos with a Paul Bunyan axe, but it suits him. I’m also now very curious to see if he can Mjolnir any weapon back to him, or if that feature came with the axe.
This trailer sort of gives the impression that this God of War is an open-world reboot. It’s neither of those things, though the game does seem to favor a less linear design to its world, probably because the new hardware could handle it. And despite the shift to Norse mythology, it’s not considered a reboot. This is a sequel with the same Kratos who made us cringe when he pulled off a screaming demigod’s head — all we’ve done is fast-forwarded to a time when he finally seems to have spent most of that excess anger, allowing him to focus on preserving the best part of his legacy.
God of War does not have a release date yet, but it is a PS4 exclusive.
