It’s official. Dave Bautista (Knock at the Cabin, Dune: Part Two) has signed on to play Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series, Variety reports.
The actor was first reported to be in talks to take over the role from Ryan Hurst, who suffered a torn bicep during production that forced a recast and would’ve delayed production to 2027.
Prime Video gave its God of War series a two-season order, with the two seasons to film back-to-back. Filming originally began in Vancouver back in February and is expected to resume in the coming weeks.
All scenes featuring Hurst will have to be reshot.
It’s a brutal setback for both Hurst and production, but Bautista is well suited for the role.
The series follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Callum Vinson (Crystal Lake, Chucky) stars as Atreus, Kratos’ young son.
The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin, Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur, Max Parker (“Vampire Academy”) as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“NOS4A2”) as Thor, Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) as Sif, Alastair Duncan (God of War) as Mimir, Jeff Gulka (“The X-Files”) as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn (“The Witcher”) as Brok.
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner and writer. Frederick E.O. Toye (Fallout, Watchmen, The Boys) will direct the first two episodes.
