Don Coscarelli (Phantasm) struck horror-comedy gold back in 2002 with Bubba Ho-Tep, which starred Bruce Campbell as a man who may or may not be Elvis Presley and the late Ossie Davis as a man who may or may not be John F. Kennedy. The unlikely duo task themselves with defending their nursing home from a soul-sucking mummy, and oh boy is it delightfully wacky. The film ended with the promise of a follow-up, but well over 10 years later, Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires remains nothing more than a tease.
So will we ever see the continuing adventures of Elvis/Sebastian Haff? During a Reddit AMA session over the weekend, Coscarelli was asked that very question. And though he didn’t have much of an update to provide, we thought you Bubba Ho-Tep fans out there would at least be happy to know that Coscarelli is still intent on making the prequel a reality.
“I would love to do more Bubba Ho-tep and more Elvis,” said Coscarelli. “That was a film I really enjoyed making. We had it set up at one time with Bruce playing opposite Paul Giamatti as Elvis’s manager Colonel Parker. Unfortunately that one fell apart. Elvis is eternal, though. We’ll get it done one day.”
Last we heard, Campbell had departed the long-gestating project, and Ron Perlman stepped in to fill his jumpsuit. It was at the time being described as ’50s/’60s-set prequel, centered on Elvis shooting a film in Louisiana when he runs afoul of a coven of she-vampires.
