“The Walking Dead” Behind the Scenes Photos Show Carl’s Nasty Eye Hole
Because we know you wanted to see it in all its gory glory.
AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has been having some well-documented struggles with ratings this season, but we’ve got a good feeling that last night’s episode did some much needed course correction. The 90-minute episode returned to the season’s main storyline in satisfying fashion, primarily centered on Carl’s failed attempt to assassinate Negan. As he does, Negan began systematically breaking down the young Grimes, forcing him to reveal his missing eye, watch a Savior get branded with a scalding hot iron, and even sing him a song.
Ever since Carl lost his eye he’s had a bandage covering the wound, and Negan’s curiosity about the ocular trauma was no doubt echoed by most viewers. What does it look like underneath that bandage? We finally got a glimpse of Carl’s missing eye thanks to a disturbing scene that brought the little badass to tears, and now we’ve been provided with a much better look at the makeup.
Chandler Riggs tweeted out the behind the scenes photos:
These are some of the continuity photos we took when we were trying to figure out how dark the eye should be.
As you’ll see below, this makeup actually looks WAY better than it did in the episode. Maybe it was just the lighting but it looked like they went way too dark with the eye hole, giving it the appearance of one of those Spirit Halloween makeup kits that was haphazardly applied by someone way less talented than the show’s makeup crew. Now THIS… this looks totally badass…

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
