“Stranger Things” Cast Wins Screen Actors Guild Award; David Harbour Delivers Incredible Speech

We will shelter freaks and outcasts. We will hunt monsters.

At the Golden Globes this year, Netflix’s “Stranger Things” was nominated in two categories, but unfortunately left the show without scooping up any awards. But last night, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the nostalgia-inducing series fared much better. The entire cast took home the “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series” award, which was needless to say well-earned by the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour. The cast is one of the most lovable in TV history, and the characters instantly iconic.

But what really stole the show last night was David Harbour’s acceptance speech, which absolutely tore the house down. With the “Stranger Things” cast beside him, an impassioned Harbour (who plays Chief Hopper on the show) spoke out about the current state of America, noting that while it may seem silly to be celebrating a TV show amid all that’s going on in the world right now, we can’t discredit the importance of entertainment and its powerful ability to “cultivate a more empathetic and understanding society by revealing intimate truths that serve as a forceful reminder to folks that when they feel broken, afraid, and tired, they are not alone.” He continued, “we are united in that we are all human beings and we are all together on this horrible, painful, joyous, exciting, and mysterious ride that is being alive.” All this while Winona Ryder made a series of meme-worthy faces that sealed the deal on it being the best acceptance speech in TV history.

This isn’t a political issue, folks. It’s a human one. And we tip our hats to David Harbour for using the platform he was given last night to spread the most important message of all.

Check out the incredible speech below.
