It may seem odd that this year’s most talked about horror movie, this weekend’s Get Out, was directed by Jordan Peele, but the comedian making his feature debut with a horror film should come as no big surprise to his fans. In his Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” Peele often spoofed the horror genre, notably lampooning The Exorcist and Gremlins 2 with brilliant spoofs.
Get Out, as anyone who’s seen the trailer is surely aware, aims to start an important conversation about the race issues that very much still plague this country, but it’s actually not the first time Peele has used the horror genre to comment on race. Back in October of 2012, the “Key & Peele” sketch “White Zombies” sure had nothing to do with the 1932 film or Rob Zombie’s band.
In the sketch, Key & Peele find themselves in a suburban neighborhood when the zombie apocalypse begins, and though they’re initially running for their lives, they soon realize that the white zombies don’t want anything to do with them. In fact, the zombies are scared of them.
You could say that Get Out was the film Jordan Peele was always destined to make.
