It’s never a bad day to watch a Nazi get his face melted off.
Long before Quentin Tarantino slaughtered a whole bunch of Nazis in Inglourious Basterds, Steven Spielberg did it first in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The first installment in the Indiana Jones franchise was released in 1981, and though it may be classified as a family adventure film, you sure wouldn’t guess that if you only watched the scene we’re about to watch in slow-mo.
Towards the end of the film, the Nazis open up the titular Ark and, well, I’m pretty sure you know what happens. Three Nazis suffer particularly cruel fates: Dietrich’s head shrivels up like a raisin, Toht’s face melts to shit and Belloq’s head explodes like he’s in a Scanners film. It’s Toht that has the nastiest death scene in the film, as his face completely melts right down to his skull.
You’ve seen the scene countless times. And you’ve surely also seen it in GIF form. But I promise you’ve never seen Toht’s death slowed down to 1,110% ultra slow-motion. Until now, that is.
