Ridley Scott Talks Reaction to ‘Prometheus’ Influencing ‘Alien: Covenant’

Why is there more Xenomorph action this time around? The fans.

When Prometheus was released back in 2012, many Alien fans were not too pleased to see that Ridley Scott had returned to the franchise with a bold new vision that deviated significantly from his 1979 classic. The story was about the newly-introduced Engineers rather than the Xenomorphs; but its sequel (as you’ve surely gathered) is more of a straight up Alien film.

So what happened? Scott explained to Yahoo, admitting that Prometheus was so different because he thought us fans were tired of the Xenomorphs. Years later, he realized he was wrong.

We discovered from [Prometheus] that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster] and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong’. The fans, in a funny kind of way – they’re not the final word – but they are the reflection of your doubts about something. And then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right’. I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.

Was it a good idea to listen to fans? Find out when Alien: Covenant arrives on May 19, 2017.
