Expected to hit home video this coming October, Child’s Play creator Don Mancini’s brand new franchise installment Cult of Chucky will pick up where the fantastic Curse of Chucky left off, while also firmly tying itself into the original trilogy. Both Jennifer Tilly and Alex Vincent will star in the film, which promises to be yet another treat for fans of the enduring Chucky saga.
Mancini spoke a bit about the recently wrapped film with CBC this week, teasing a Shining-esque winter environment and noting that this will be the craziest Chucky tale of them all. Literally.
He told the site:
I wrote it with snow in mind. We shot all night outside for one sequence, and we got snowed out with a blizzard. We had to shut down for safety reasons. Our zoom lens also froze. But the snow was great — that really paid off. It gave the film a Shining-like feel.
In Cult of Chucky, we’re doing a mental institution movie. There will be dream sequences and lots of surrealism. This will be Chucky on drugs. To me, I don’t know why people would take the approach of doing the same things with a sequel. Sequels offer the opportunity to subvert expectations. All good storytelling is about good surprises. Sequels, by their very nature, bring baggage — how can I subvert them in a fun way?
Here’s the official synopsis that came with the initial announcement trailer…
“Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.”
Brad Dourif once again provides Chucky’s voice, while his daughter, Fiona Dourif, will be reprising her Curse of Chucky role. Also returning is Curse star Summer H. Howell.
