Syfy Adapting George R.R. Martin’s Supernatural Space Tale “Nightflyers”

Eight scientists. Aboard a possessed ship.

Syfy is celebrating its 25th anniversary this coming September, and they’re looking to upgrade their programming in a big way. In the network’s own words, they’re going to be “doubling down on premium original programming,” and one of the first orders of business is a television series based on “Game of Thrones” writer George R.R. Martin’s supernatural novella “Nightflyers”!

The novella, published in 1980, was turned into the same-named filmed back in 1987, and the Syfy series is being developed with executive producers Gene Klein (“Suits”), David Bartis (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), and Doug Liman (“Suits”) of Hypnotic; Alison Rosenzweig (Jacob’s Ladder) and Michael Gaeta (Jacob’s Ladder) of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions; and Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train), who will write the adaptation. Robert Jaffe, who produced the 1987 film, will produce.

In “Nightflyers”…

Set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction, a crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew members near their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

Published

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
