Sam Raimi Almost Directed ‘The Fly 2’?!

Published

Well this sure would’ve been different.

Just three years after David Cronenberg unleashed The Fly, one of the all-time best horror movie remakes, the practical effects-heavy film spawned a sequel in the form of 1989’s The Fly 2. The directorial debut of effects artist Chris Walas, the sequel centered on the son of Seth Brundle, and it was co-written by Mick Garris from a story by Garris.

But did you know that Garris’ story was almost brought to life by a fresh-off-Evil Dead 2 Sam Raimi?!

On the latest episode of podcast Post Mortem with Mick Garris, guest Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “American Gods”) and host Garris took some time to gush over Raimi’s Evil Dead 2, praising it for its pitch-perfect blend of horror and comedy. The conversation led to Garris revealing the fun fact about The Fly 2, which to my knowledge had never before been told.

When I was writing Fly 2, originally Sam Raimi was going to direct it, on the strength of Evil Dead 2,” Garris told Fuller. “It would’ve been a VERY different movie. Then [Sam] and his brother wrote a different treatment that went way out to cloud wacky land, and that would’ve been amazing. And it didn’t work out.”

Let’s see that treatment, Sam!

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
