SNES Classic Announced; ‘Super Castlevania IV’, ‘Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts’ Included!

We knew this was coming.

Today Nintendo announced the SNES Classic Edition for both North America and Europe. Available September 29th, the miniaturized console will come equipped with 21 games, including the never-before-released Star Fox 2.

Quick history lesson: Star Fox 2 was essentially complete and in final beta, but was cancelled by Nintendo to avoid taking focus away from the then-upcoming Nintendo 64. The final beta was eventually leaked online, cleaned up and translated by fans, but this will be the first time we get the complete version.

For horror gamers, there are four classic games that are sure to satisfy: Nintendo’s own Super Metroid, Capcom’s Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, and Konami’s Super Castlevania IV and Contra III: The Alien Wars. All four are classic examples of the 16-bit era: Great graphics and music, with often punishing difficulty. Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts frustrated the hell out of me as a kid, but it was so damn fun to play. The same can be said of Castlevania IV, which in my opinion has one of the best soundtracks of any game from that era.

Meanwhile, Contra III and Super Metroid are about as close as you could get to having Aliens on your SNES (apart from Alien 3 or Aliens Vs. Predator, but that’s a different story).

The console will come with two corded controllers (which are now five feet in length instead of the three feet on the NES Classic), an HDMI cable, and a USB charger for the console itself. Nintendo also stated that they hope to resolve the production issues that were a problem with the now-cancelled NES Classic. But given the expected demand, who knows how far that will go?

I’m surely not the only one who wishes certain other games were included (where’s Chrono Trigger or Zombies Ate My Neighbours?). Still, many of the original carts are now going for collector prices on eBay, so this is probably the easiest way to play these classics.

‘Alien Hunt’ – It’s an ‘Alien’ and ‘Predator’ Mockbuster Rolled into One! [Trailer]

While you wait for Alien: Romulus, the folks over at Devilworks have cooked up their own slice of “mockbuster” fun with Alien Hunt, and we’re debuting the trailer here on BD this morning.

This brand-new sci-fi horror from director Aaron Mirtes (The Bigfoot Trap, Painted in Blood) is set for its US premiere on May 14, and you can find it on digital thanks to Devilworks.

You can exclusively watch the official trailer for Alien Hunt below, which looks to combine elements of Alien and Predator. This particular “mockbuster” has very little interest in hiding its inspirations, with the alien designs plucked straight out of H.R. Giger’s beautiful brain. Hey, if you’re going to pull from other movies, might as well take from the all-time greats!

In Alien Hunt, “On a hunting trip in the wilderness, a group of siblings discovers an abandoned military outpost on their land, but is it what it seems?

“Their trip takes a sinister turn when they find themselves facing off against a relentless army of extra-terrestrial beings. Suddenly, the hunters become the hunted.

“The formidable squad of alien soldiers will stop at nothing to wipe out the enemy and in an all-out, brutal battle for survival, it’s kill or be killed in Alien Hunt.”

Barron Boedecker (Escape Pod, The Bigfoot Trap), Brent Bentley (The Perfect In-Laws, Haunt Season), Deiondre Teagle (The Visitor, Painted in Blood, Death Ranch), Chelsey Fuller (The Bigfoot Trap, The Silent Natural), Jesse Santoyo (A Nashville Country Christmas, Potter’s Ground), and Adam Pietripaoli (The Bigfoot Trap, The OctoGames) star.
