It’s impossible to overstate the influence of Tobe Hooper, George Romero and Wes Craven on shaping literally the entire horror genre into what it is today. With films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street, those three masters forever changed the game.
Unfortunately, we’ve reached an incredibly sad point where Hooper, Romero and Craven are no longer with us; Craven died back in 2015, while we lost both Hooper and Romero in the past couple months here in 2017. All three were damn sure masters of horror. Perhaps even more importantly, they were indie film pioneers.
Whether or not you even believe in an afterlife, it probably puts a smile on your face to imagine Hooper, Romero and Craven hanging out together wherever they might be right now. Artist Kyle Burles imagined such a scene for a touching art tribute to the three horror mavericks this week, which we wanted to share with you today.
“I loved the idea of three of the world’s greatest horror directors getting together afterwards and hitting the theatre,” Burles wrote on his website. “This really got me thinking about influence and idols. When I was a kid these guys were some of mine. I vividly remember when I first saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Most of the kids I knew growing up had heroes that played sports, action movie stars and rock singers. I was different. Most of my heroes were horror movie directors and writers.”
