As far as we’re aware, New Line doesn’t have any plans in motion to bring Freddy Krueger back, but we can be pretty sure that a new reboot of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise isn’t too far behind the massive success of IT this year.
The big question, of course, is in regards to who would play Freddy in a new take on the Elm Street saga. And who better to answer that question than Robert Englund?!
During a new chat with Cinema Blend, Englund just revealed his pick.
“Well the gossip I’ve heard, and I don’t know how valid this is, but there has been some talk about using, or perhaps he’s been approached, Kevin Bacon,” said Englund. “Yeah. I think that would be great. He’s in one of my favorite little horror movies, Stir of Echoes, and you should check it out if you haven’t seen it. And I just think Kevin’s the right size. I think he respects horror movies. He doesn’t make fun of them. I think it would be real interesting.”
To clarify Englund’s comments, we’re pretty sure he’s referring to something Bacon himself tweeted out last summer. When a fan tweeted to Bacon that they’d love to see him play Freddy Krueger, Bacon replied with a simple, “I like the way you think“… suggesting that he’d be up for it if he was approached.
It’s possible that Bacon *has* been approached in the wake of that tweet, but we must again note that we have heard nothing of the sort at this time.
Nevertheless, it’s clear that Kevin Bacon is at the very least interested in playing Freddy, and it’s pretty cool to hear that Robert Englund is completely on board with him taking over the role he made famous. As are we, as Bacon has certainly proven that he’s got the chops to deliver a terrifying new take on the horror icon.
Kevin Bacon as Freddy Krueger… how cool would that be?!
