If Todd McFarlane hadn’t landed Jamie Foxx in the lead role of his Spawn reboot, I’d be in tears laughing at the mere speculation that Jeremy Renner (Hansel and Gretel, Tag, Avengers) could be starring. Yet, here we are. Unconfirmed rumors are swirling that Renner will not only star in Spawn, but will be playing Twitch Williams.
A source with knowledge of the production tipped The Hashtag Show (who has been wrong on many occasions) off to Renner’s potential role as Twitch, a character described as “an honest detective” who will team up with Spawn as he seeks vengeance for the murder of his young daughter.
McFarlane, who created Spawn and will direct and produce the adaptation from his own script, has openly stated that he intends to keep casting quiet. We’ll see how this all pans out.
Foxx will star as the title character, an elite mercenary (Al Simmons) who is killed but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil.
“Spawn” was the first massive launch pad for Image Comics in May of 1992. New Line Cinema would adapt the comic in 1997 with Michael Jai White starring alongside John Leguizamo. A “Spawn” animated series also ran from 1997-1999 totally 18 episodes.
