Whisperings began circling on the internet in early 2019 and went into a lot more detail about what players can expect: you’ll be invading kingdoms and stealing the powers of their rulers after a FromSoftware-style battle, which will then serve you well when you have to fight other kings.
As Game of Thrones ended its eight-year TV run this week, its creator George R.R. Martin posted on his blog, summing up his feelings on the event and the show’s run in general. The really interesting part of the blog post comes when he gets round to his own future projects (which are many). It’s here that he reveals he has worked as a consultant on an upcoming video game from a Japanese studio,
‘There are these short films I am hoping to make, adaptations of classic stories by one of the most brilliant, quirky, and original writers our genre has ever produced. I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan.’
Now this is a long-standing rumor, and the Japanese studio in question is widely believed to be From Software, the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The game, that is believed to be codenamed ‘GR’ is supposedly an open-world game featuring horseback-riding and several kingdoms to visit and leaders to kill for their abilities. It has also been rumored to appear at Microsoft’s E3 2019 conference next month. Gematsu has confirmed some, but not all of these details.
It sounds a little bit like a Game of Thrones game, but it’d be more likely that aspects of Martin’s work have been incorporated into From’s framework. Hopefully well be seeing more on this next month.
