New Sci-Fi Game ‘Disintegration’ by Halo Co-Creator is Teased for a Gamescom Reveal
Time for another world premiere.
On Thursday morning, Geoff Keighley — photogenic host of everything games related and apparent Elon Musk stan — announced via Twitter that Gamescom 2019’s new Opening Night Live show will feature the full reveal of Disintegration, a new sci-fi IP spearheaded by Halo co-creator, Marcus Lehto.
The teaser Keighley included with his tweet was long on loving pans of spaceship parts and short on details. What we can tell you is that Disintegration is being developed by Lehto’s V1 Interactive and published by Private Division. Disintegration’s proper reveal is coming soon: Keighley will be producing and hosting Opening Night Live on August 19.

Given the flair for showmanship that Keighley has brought to The Game Awards and E3 Coliseum for years, we can safely assume that Opening Night Live will be studded with new announcements and special guests. Gamescom is the largest consumer games event with nearly 400,000 attendees expected during this year’s four-day-long show.
Many longtime E3 attendees noted that this year’s show felt emptier than in years’ past thanks to the absence of Sony, EA and Activision from the show floor, and some (like Giant Bomb’s Jeff Gerstmann) speculated that 2019’s expo might be the last. With the advent of the Nintendo Direct, PSX, State of Play and other platform- and publisher-specific streams throughout the year, the One Big Event isn’t as necessary as it once was.
If the doomsayers are correct, the future will likely bring more events like Opening Night Live that keep the announcement-fueled hype train running all year long.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
