A significant detail about the history of Jason Voorhees that Friday the 13th fans love explaining is the trajectory of the actual killer as opposed to the various misconceptions about him. The most notable point of correction, of course, is that it’s actually Jason’s mother Pamela Voorhees who is the killer in the original movie, as she gets revenge against counselors after the trauma of Jason drowning at Camp Crystal Lake.
Another notable distinction is that, while the most iconic image of Jason is of him wearing a hockey mask, Pamela didn’t wear a disguise initially and, in Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason merely wore a burlap sack to hide his identity. It wasn’t until Friday the 13th Part III that Jason acquired his famous hockey mask, which became a defining trait for the character in subsequent appearances.
Peacock‘s Crystal Lake is a prequel series, focusing more on Pamela’s trauma and her path to becoming a murderer. While it seems strange to think of a Friday the 13th story that doesn’t feature Jason in a hockey mask, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane recently explained how his series honors fan expectations.
“There is a mask. It might be a different mask than fans are used to, but it will not be a different mask than fans have seen,” Kane confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. He added, “We show the origin story of the mask and why it’s there specifically … and it all connects.”
The upcoming prequel series marks the first live-action entry in the Friday the 13th franchise since 2009’s reboot, which blended together elements from the first three movies in the series. It’s a bold move for a new chapter in the long-running saga to pivot away from Jason Voorhees, especially given how passionate of a following the character has earned.
The filmmakers behind the series have the unenviable task of trying to tell a new story in the saga that honors what came before it, yet feels distinct on its own. Knowing that the series will honor the iconic mask in some way, yet with a variation that isn’t the hockey mask, while also being established in the franchise, only raises more questions.
It would make the most sense that we get to see the burlap sack mask from Friday the 13th Part 2, but the justification of why Jason will be wearing it is something we’ll have to wait to discover when the series actually premieres.
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake premiere on Peacock on October 15.
