A new trailer for the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake debuted over the weekend and it immediately sparked speculation about Jason Voorhees and his life before attending Camp Crystal Lake. Namely, rather than being an average child, this trailer implied that he had a connection to a research project before his death, potentially explaining how he might be a superhuman who could come back from the dead.
While these are currently nothing more than teases and clues about what the show will explore, the reaction from fans to such theories have caused showrunner Brad Caleb Kane to weigh in on the matter.
Taking to Instagram, Kane posted a photo of Dr. Freeze from Batman and Robin, captioning the post, “It’s not the CIA. He’s not a gov’t super soldier or an Eleven. He’s probably just a Chud. Or at worst a Trog. In any case, all will be known Oct. 15. Y’know, they called Copernicus a heretic at first, too. And look how that turned out! 🤔 Well, bad for him, I guess. Nevermind. Enjoy!!!”

What’s worth noting, though, is that Kane jokingly shoots down the idea that Jason is an “Eleven,” referencing Millie Bobby Brown’s Stranger Things role, as well as mentioning various horror creatures. While we doubt Jason will be revealed to actually be connected to any of the beloved franchises Kane mentioned, the filmmaker could intentionally be misdirecting theorists from buying too much into more ambitious speculation.
Even though Kane’s post might have been an attempt to settle the speculation about Jason and Pamela Voorhees, it’s possible that we’re just left with more questions. On the one hand, the entire premise of Crystal Lake and how it explores Pamela’s (Linda Cardellini) backstory before we see her murderous side in the original Friday the 13th makes us wonder why this is a story worth telling. Given that we haven’t gotten a new movie in the series since the 2009 reboot, we’re happy to take any new stories we can get, though an origin story for Pamela didn’t seem like the most obvious angle to pursue.
On the other hand, if Kane and his creative team have found a way to at least imply that Jason was more than your average boy, it could ultimately reveal how he was able to survive drownings, stabbings, and all of the other grievous injuries he suffered. Admittedly, not a lot of people have shown much interest in getting to the truth behind Jason, and the less we know about him, the better.
Still, Brad Caleb Kane’s remarks have us all the more curious about Crystal Lake and what’s in store for us when the series premieres on Peacock on October 15.
