[Horror Queers Podcast] Pro-Queer Message Can’t Save the Tonally Challenged ‘All Cheerleaders Die’

The fart is the joke.

Since the New Year, Trace and I have been checking out films that mirror or complement the films from the first month of the podcast. That means we’ve done a second round of Speed Dating, sequels Scream 2 and Hostel: Part II. Now it’s time for our Jennifer’s Body-like episode on All Cheerleaders Die.

Hailing from filmmakers Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (Previous episode: I Know Who Killed Me), the horror comedy tackles the conflict between cheerleaders and football players in a battle of the sexes. When homicidal jock Terry (Tom Williamson) kills a car full of cheerleaders, it’s up to “Wiccan” lesbian Leena (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) to resuscitate the girls, including her ex-girlfriend Maddy (Caitlin Stasey), so that they can wreak bloody revenge on the boys.

Gem stones, cringe-inducing teen dialogue and fart jokes follow in a film that doesn’t nail its comedy or its horror. The result is a film that should be fun, but only manages to frustrate and annoy.

Episode 57 – All Cheerleaders Die (2013)

Anniversary month continues as the boys head back to high school, bitches! Along with special guest PRIMO the ALIEN, we’re digging into co-directors Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson’s remake of their own film, which is itself a franchise non-starter (Part One, you say? Show us the receipts!)

Despite a killer opening, this film certainly did not “blue our balls” with its mish-mash of tones, weird pacing and poor editing. Thankfully there’s jokes to be made about butt plugs, vagina freezers and Trace’s improv skills.

Plus: is this film part of the Eli Roth dude bro school of lesbianic filmmaking, or is it subverting the male gaze and offering up a pro-queer reading? We’re honestly not sure!

Cross out All Cheerleaders Die!

Coming up on Wednesday: Our final week of Anniversary Month requires some stalking, so what better film to check out than J. Lo and her cookies? That’s right, we’re revisiting The Boy Next Door on its fifth anniversary!
