Hellraiser, Hellraiser, Hellraiser! Busy times for the once-sleepy franchise with the Hell Priest serving as the star of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights and receiving their own game this October with Hellraiser: Revival. Looks like the Halloweenies were ahead of the curve for 202666, no?
Well, we’re almost towards the end of our coverage. Kind of. Today, we’re spotlighting two episodes that find the franchise at a crossroads in the aughts.
First up, we’ve got 2000’s Hellraiser: Inferno, the fifth entry of the franchise and first to go DTV. The feature directorial debut of Master of Horror Scott Derrickson is readymade for an elaborate discussion, from aesthetic choices influenced by David Lynch, Jacob’s Ladder, and Silent Hill to the hit-or-miss cast led by a familiar face in Barker’s world: Nightbreed star Craig Sheffer.
Next, there’s 2002’s Hellraiser: Hellseeker, the sixth entry in the series from. Together, the gang plays with the puzzling, if not pretzeled, behind-the-scenes hell before diving right into the lake of fire with Mayhem, aka Dean Winters, and a familiar face in Ashley Laurence who may or may not actually be playing Kirsty.
