We kicked off “Thanks for the Judds,” a six-week programming block of Ashley Judd thrillers, earlier this month with Gary Fleder’s adaptation of James Patterson’s Kiss the Girls (listen) and Stephan Elliott’s notorious flop Eye of the Beholder (listen). Now, we’re discussing what may be the magnum opus of the Ashley Judd Thriller™ in Bruce Beresford‘s film Double Jeopardy (1999).
In the film, Libby Parsons (Ashley Judd) is sent to prison for her husband Nick’s (Bruce Greenwood) murder after he disappears on a romantic weekend boating trip. While incarcerated, she learns that Nick faked his death and is helpfully informed by a friendly inmate (Roma Maffia) that she can kill Nick as soon as she gets out of prison since she’s already served her sentence for his murder (the titular double jeopardy). Released on parole six years later, Libby goes on the hunt for Nick, with parole officer Travis Lehman (Tommy Lee Jones) hot on her trail.
