The Bloody Disgusting Podcast Network, Bloody FM, is thrilled to announce that we’re heading into the Backrooms with the launch of brand new horror fiction podcast The Backrooms: Silverfish.
The Backrooms: Silverfish is a new take on the Backrooms mythology, one that’s focused less on the place, and more on the people who get caught within, and the effects on their psyche.
Earlier this year, A24’s hit horror movie Backrooms brought a niche internet community to the center stage of pop culture. But the Backrooms is infinite, and Kevin Cooley’s take hopes to tell some of the strangest stories the concept has to offer.
The Backrooms: Silverfish launches October 13 with five daily episode drops (October 13-18)!
From there, you can expect new episodes every other Tuesday, starting October 27.
Kevin Cooley has been developing this series since 2022. He explains, “I created The Backrooms: Silverfish because I think we all need a long-form Backrooms story that foregrounds character and storytelling. The iconic visuals and sprawling lore of the Backrooms run a certain risk, I think, of transfixing us into pure escapism—but the Backrooms is at its best when it is a fantastical method for grappling with the world, and not a method for leaving it behind.”
“To me, the Backrooms is an attempt to take ownership over the horrors and the emptiness of life in our very-corporate world, and then re-enchant those things with mythology, meaning, and wonder,” Cooley tells Bloody Disgusting. “Several generations born into a changing world, after all, were promised that we ‘could become anything we wanted to’—and we found out very quickly that promise was as empty as an abandoned office complex. And now, like your average Backrooms wanderer, we are in many ways still mentally stuck in/on the now-empty world of before: water slides, alphabet mats, and ball pits, as far as the eye can see.”
Here’s what to expect from The Backrooms: Silverfish…
Some folks say you could pick every blade of grass every human has ever walked on in the time it would take to walk across a single pixel on a map of the Backrooms.
Unfortunately for Remmy Higgins—a defeated art school dropout working a dead-end job at a lousy pizzeria—“some folks” are correct. Glitched away to this eerie and infinite expanse of empty nostalgia, Remmy scours the liminal backcountry between the mental and the physical in search of an escape. And with his only help coming from a seemingly sentient pocket arcade toy that cannot speak outside the stock phrases of children’s games…his chances of success are looking grim! To survive, the lonely artist must outwit and evade a litany of unwanted and unholy company.
He is hunted, after all, by a procession of manic apparitions stepping out from his regret-filled past, and the grotesque and gargantuan insect god that feeds on them: “The Silverfish.” To blaze any trail home, Remmy will have to rip a paradox apart and use the pieces to forge an answer to an unanswerable question: how do you out-think a god who eats your very thoughts?
