[Horror Queers Podcast] Lesbian Parenting in ‘Good Manners’

Published

Ah-Lizzie McGuire!

When August began, Trace and I declared it Femme Fatale month, exploring first Takashi Miike’s controversial Audition, and then Tyler MacIntyre’s Tragedy Girls last week.

This week, we’re flying solo to Sao Paulo, Brazil to check in on Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas‘ dark fairytale festival fave, Good Manners. Trace had the opportunity to review this mysterious film at Fantastic Fest back in 2017, so he knew what we were in for, though he strongly cautions everyone who hasn’t seen the film to go in knowing as few details as possible.

Good Manners is about two women – Clara (Isabél Zuaa) and Ana (Marjorie Estiano) – who develop an unlikely bond when the former begins to care for the latter during her pregnancy. As the pair grow increasingly close, the startling truth about Ana’s child will be revealed and Clara will have to live with the consequences.

Episode 35 – Good Manners (2017)

Joe and Trace travel to Brazil to check in on expectant mother Ana and her nanny/housekeeper Clara in Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas’ dark fairytale festival fave.

Trace finds a couple of surprisingly conservative readings regarding abortion and lesbianism in this pregnancy horror film. The pair discuss the film’s critical reception and how that ties into the film’s “two movies in one” structure, Joe tackles the film’s subtle race critique and ribs Trace about the film’s CGI and homage to Frankenstein.

Plus: in one of the longest plot recaps in the show’s history, Trace somehow finds a way to reference The Lizzie McGuire movie AGAIN and Joe butchers yet another round of actor names.

This week’s Game: What kind of baby monster would you choose to raise and why?

The Double ‘Othering’ of David in ‘An American Werewolf in London’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Published

After concluding March with Raja Gosnell’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (listen) and James Whale’s The Invisible Man (listen), we kicked off April with a discussion of  Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (listen).
Now we’re checking off another classic with John Landis‘ 1981 werewolf film, An American Werewolf in London.
In the film, American best friends David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) are horrifically attacked while backpacking through the UK Moors. Jack is killed and David spends a month recuperating in the hospital, where he befriends attractive nurse Alex (Jenny Agutter) and kindly Dr. Hirsch (John Woodvine).
On the cusp of his release, the mangled corpse of Jack visits David, warning that on the full moon he will become a lycanthrope unless he kills himself. But David is unable to accept his fate and a series of terrible murders follow.
As the bodies (and the comedy) pile up, the question becomes: what will David, Alex, and Dr. Hirsch do to stop the deaths?

Episode 277: An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Try not to wolf out because we’re talking about John Landis’ classic, An American Werewolf in London (1981). Backpacking along with us is Xero Gravity, who went on a werewolf binge and has recommendations!
Up for discussion: Alex’s underdeveloped character, urban set pieces, dirty movie theaters, and British rural horror.
Plus: a queer reading of David and Jack’s relationship, Jewish horror, an unsexy sex scene, and extended tangents about werewolf anatomy.

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re undergoing a risky experimental treatment for a “different” kind of child with Netflix’s 2019 title, Eli.
