[Horror Queers Podcast] The Murky Politics of ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’
Dana Scully Would NEVER.
The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving have taken us on a rather kooky ride! First, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Interview With the Vampire with a look at the homoerotic subtext between Louis (Brad Pitt) and Lestat (Tom Cruise), then we looked at the homoerotic text between Walter (Michael Fassbender) and David (Michael Fassbender) in Ridley Scott’s 2017 sequel Alien: Covenant, changed things up a bit with a praise session for Darren Stein’s 1999 black comedy Jawbreaker! Now, Joe and I are celebrating our 50th episode with a very heavy discussion on…..the second The X-Files movie?
In the film, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) have been out of the FBI for several years, with Mulder living in isolation and Scully having become a doctor at a Catholic hospital, where she has formed a bond with a critically ill child patient. When an FBI agent is mysteriously kidnapped and a former Catholic priest who has been convicted of pedophilia claims to be experiencing psychic visions of the endangered agent, Scully is asked to bring Mulder back to the bureau to consult on the case because of his work with psychics.

Episode 50 – The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
The Horror Queers are celebrating their 50th episode with a Very Special Episode discussing…..pedophilia? And The X-Files? If that sounds like a weird combination, it’s because it is. Luckily, they have Trace’s better half (i.e., husband) and X-Files stan Ari Drew helping them through this momentous occasion!
What’s the best way to reward your fans that have been watching your show for nine years? According to series creator Chris Carter, it’s to release a completely standalone film that eschews the series’ mythology in favor of trying to earn new viewers! Oh, and let’s have very undeveloped and un-nuanced discussions about major issues like pedophilia, stem cell research and head-transplanted Frankenstein monsters that walk some murky areas on transgender issues.
This Week’s Game: What is a television show that you would like to see adapted to the big screen as a horror movie?
Cross out The X-Files: I Want to Believe!
Coming up on Wednesday: We’re kicking off December with a decidedly less serious discussion about Ryan Reynolds‘ abs and some good old fashioned casual homophobia in Blade: Trinity, which is celebrating it’s 15th anniversary!
