[Horror Queers Podcast] Ogling Greasy Guzman in ‘The Boy Next Door’

Horror Queers Boy Next Door

He loves your mother’s cookies.

We’ve spent all of January celebrating our one-year anniversary by covering films that mirrored our first handful of episodes. First, we declared Scream 2 to be the best film in the Scream franchise (mirroring our episode on Scream), then we marveled at the surprising feminism in Eli Roth’s Hostel: Part II (mirroring our episode on Hostel) and then we lamented the colossal misfire that was All Cheerleaders Die (mirroring our episode on Jennifer’s Body). To close out our anniversary month, we’re mirroring our episode on Swimfan by having some fun with Rob Cohen‘s (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) 2015 erotic thriller The Boy Next Door.

In the film, a high school teacher named Claire (Jennifer Lopez) is in the midst of being separated from her husband (John Corbett) and has a one-night stand with her 19-year-old neighbor Noah (Ryan Guzman), who develops a dangerous obsession with her.

Episode 58 – The Boy Next Door (2015)

Grab your first edition copy of The Iliad, because we’re closing out our anniversary month by covering Rob Cohen’s The Boy Next Door, an erotic thriller that is neither erotic nor thrilling! Joining us for this riff-fest is noted The Boy Next Door defender (and fellow Bloody Disgusting columnist) Matt Donato, and he’s brought along a raw chicken for all of us to share!

Join us as we commend Lopez for using her own clothes to cut down on production costs, but lament how the film completely wastes Kristin Chenoweth (despite her awesome “Can I Speak to Your Manager?” haircut).

Also on the docket: we try to figure out why people hate Lopez and why all of the male characters in the film going through crazy mood swings. Trace goes to bat for one of the film’s deleted scenes, Joe is confused by the concept of a penis purse and Matt can’t get over all of the references to The Wiz.

Finally, we attempt to list off the multitude of Chekhov’s items in the film (EpiPen, engine, cookies, etc.).

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re celebrating Joe’s birthday by finally covering a Hellraiser film (his favorite horror franchise), but it’s not going to be a good one. That’s right, we’re discussing Hellraiser: Bloodline, aka the one in space!

Shakespearean Education in the Vincent Price-Starring ‘Theater of Blood’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Published

Butch knows best…

After concluding May with discussions of the disaster “slasher” The Poseidon Adventure (listen) and Michael Biehn’s demon twink in the messy-but-watchable The Fan (listen), we’re heading back to the ’70s to discuss our very first Vincent Price film in Douglas Hickox‘s horror comedy Theater of Blood (1973).

In Theater of Blood, Vincent Price stars as Edward Lionheart, a disgraced Shakespearean actor who begins targeting the critics who shamed him. The gimmick? He’s taking inspiration from the death scenes in William Shakespeare’s plays! Aiding him is his daughter Edwina (Diana Rigg), who acts as the honeypot for her father’s macabre scheme.

Episode 388: Theater of Blood (1973)

Brush up on your Shakespeare and protect those poodles because we’re covering our very first Vincent Price film in Douglas Hickox’s horror comedy Theater of Blood (1973), a personal favorite of both Price and Diana Rigg.

Join us as we go all in on this somewhat episodic (but also educational!) proto-slasher, wondering if we’re supposed to know that’s Diana Rigg in hippie drag, and cackling at some of these murder set pieces.

Plus, “Handsy Dickman,” narcissistic gravestones, antisemitic stage makeup, and the ultimate debate: is it theatER or theatRE?

C/W: Attempted suicide, off-screen dog murder.
