[Horror Queers Podcast] The Lurid Melodrama of Lesbian Thriller ‘The Quiet’

We’re still jet-lagged from all of the travel during “Vacation Month”, especially last week’s trip to Rome for Tenebrae. This week we’re taking it easy with a very, very low-key thriller in the form of The Quiet, the 2005 incest drama from lesbian director Jamie Babbit and queer screenwriters Abdi Nazemian and Micah Schraft.

In the film, deaf/mute orphan Dot (Camilla Belle in her best performance) moves in with the Deer family, much to new “step sister” Nina (Elisha Cuthbert)’s chagrin. But Nina and her father, Paul (Martin Donovan) have a secret and it doesn’t take long for Dot to become involved in the scandal.

Featuring a demeaning role for Edie Falco as the Deer family matriarch and an embarrassing role for Shawn Ashmore as a confessional jock who is turned on by Dot’s disability, The Quiet is never ridiculous or serious enough. Falling somewhere in the middle proves to be its downfall, but discussing it proves plenty entertaining thanks to the comedic styling of our special guests: Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of the Kill by Kill podcast.

Episode 90 – The Quiet (2005) feat. Kill by Kill

On this week’s episode, we’re evoking the spirit of American Beauty with lesbian director Jamie Babbit’s incest drama/thriller The Quiet. Thankfully we’ve got Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of the Kill by Kill podcast to help us unpack all of the lurid melodrama of this Elisha Cuthbert/Camilla Belle stinker.

Where did this snooze-worthy film go wrong: the languid pacing? The atrocious dialogue? Aiming for prestige instead of embracing queerness and camp?

In between bouts of maniacal laughter about milkshakes, masturbation and Belle’s complete lack of screen presence, we never quite reach consensus (Trace *likes* this film…but can’t explain why!). All we know for certain is that Connor Kennedy wants to fuck us!

John Carpenter’s ‘Prince of Darkness’ Is Flawed But Undeniably Original [Halloweenies Podcast]

John Carpenter is back with a new album next week: Lost Themes IV: Noir.

To celebrate, the Halloweenies are unlocking their past episode from January 2022 on the maestro’s 1987 relic, Prince of Darkness. Join Michael Roffman, Dan Caffrey, McKenzie Gerber, and Rachel Reeves in the basement of a Los Angeles monastery as they decipher their feelings on the curious case study of the crossroads between science and faith.

Together, they debate whether or not this intriguing intersection overpowers the narrative and characters, chart where this fits in Carpenter’s overall oeuvre, and meditate on a few what-ifs in the casting department. They also marvel at the pulsing score, discuss its parallels to Inferno, and try to make sense of the mythos at the center.

So, go to the mirror and listen below. Subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, RadioPublic, Acast, Google Podcasts, and RSS. New to the Halloweenies? Catch up with the gang by revisiting their essential episodes on past franchises such as Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, The Evil Dead, and Chucky. This year? Alien.

You can also become a member of their Patreon, The Rewind, for hilariously irreverent commentaries (e.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gremlins), one-off deep dives on your favorite rentals (e.g. Saw, The Changeling), and even topical spinoffs like this past summer’s greatest adventure Fortune & Glory: An Indiana Jones Podcast.
