Celebrating the Best Horror of 2023 with the Hereditary Awards Winners! [Horror Queers Podcast]

Published

on

Back in December, Trace and I opened up voting in the fifth annual “Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), our version of the horror Oscars. Our supporters on Patreon helped us narrow down the shortlist in 20 categories and then the public at large, including folks on this site, voted on the winners throughout December 2023.

Going into the voting, blockbusters like Evil Dead Rise (7 nominations) and Saw X (6 nominations) led the nominations, alongside quiet streaming sleepers like Cobweb (8 nominations) and non-English language classic When Evil Lurks (5 nominations).

Now it’s time to reveal who won in the following categories:

  • Best Wide Release
  • Best Indie Release
  • Best Under The Radar Film
  • Best Non-English Language Horror Film
  • Best Horror TV Show
  • Best Queer Horror
  • Best First Feature Director
  • Best Director
  • Best Lead Performance
  • Best Supporting Performance
  • Best Ensemble
  • MVP 2023
  • Best Creature Design
  • Best Score – New for 2023
  • Best Villain
  • Best Sequence
  • Most Painful (Non-Fatal) Injury
  • Best Ending
  • Best Kill

We received plenty of feedback from the 900+ voters that the toughest category to vote for was Best Sequence, which makes sense considering the nominees:

  • Ambulance Attack – Cocaine Bear
  • Peephole – Evil Dead Rise
  • Ginza Attack – Godzilla Minus One
  • M3GAN’s Dance – M3GAN
  • Hell Montage – The Outwaters
  • Valentina’s Trap – Saw X
  • Ladder – Scream VI
  • Raft Attack – Sick
  • Head Bash – Talk To Me
  • Dog Attack – When Evil Lurks

Naturally since we are a queer horror podcast, Trace and I were delighted to shine a spotlight on the exceptional breadth of LGBTQIA nominees this year (PS: we have episodes on all of these titles except Summoning Sylvia, in case you’re interested in how they engage with queerness):

But enough from us: go listen to the episode, which features breakdowns of who should win vs who we believe will win, as well as the voting percentages in each category (two were literally so close that the winner was decided by 0.1% and 0.8% of the vote!).

Joe is a TV addict with a background in Film Studies. He co-created TV/Film Fest blog QueerHorrorMovies and writes for Bloody Disgusting, Anatomy of a Scream, That Shelf, The Spool and Grim Magazine. He enjoys graphic novels, dark beer and plays multiple sports (adequately, never exceptionally). While he loves all horror, if given a choice, Joe always opts for slashers and creature features.
