Grief makes us do strange things. When dealing with immeasurable loss, some find themselves unable to eat or drink while others wear the same article of clothing for weeks at a time. We may fall into the arms of a former flame or make dramatic changes to our everyday lives. Some are even driven to kill. Osgood Perkins’ debut film The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a chilling examination of grief and the dangerous people we turn to for comfort. Two young women rocked by tragedy converge on an icy boarding school searching for anyone to heal their broken hearts. But the father they find in the building’s dark boiler room may not have their best interests in mind.
We first meet Kat (Kiernan Shipka) in the midst of a dream foretelling her parents’ death. A freshman at an elite boarding school, she waits in vain for them to pick her up for a midwinter break, knowing the terrible news will reach her at any moment. Also stuck is Rose (Lucy Boynton), an older student lingering behind for reasons of her own. But lurking in the empty halls and classrooms is a demonic force intent on exploiting Kat’s tragedy for his own dark purposes. Meanwhile, Joan (Emma Roberts) has just escaped from a mental institution and seems to have her own business at the vacant parochial school. These two timelines merge in an explosion of grisly violence as Kat and Joan discover how far they will go to avoid being alone.
