Summer isn’t even in full swing yet but the horror onslaught continues. If you thought May was a massive month for brand new horror movies, June 2026 also comes loaded with a dense slate of new horror releases.

Save for one reboot, this month brings a ton of original new genre offerings like Leviticus, I Am Frankelda, and Kraken. Also look for brand new films from Steven Spielberg and more.

Here are ten new horror movies releasing in June 2026.

Scary Movie – In Theaters Today

Out in theaters today, June 5, is the sixth installment of the popular horror parody film series, marking the Wayans’ return to the franchise they started. Expect spoofs of anything and everything, from Scream (2022) to The Substance (our review).

Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs from a script by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, original Scary Movie director Keenen Ivory WayansCraig Wayans (Scary Movie 2), and Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House).

Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, and anything with the word legacy in it.

The core four are joined by franchise favorites Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Jon Abrahams in the legacy sequel.

The ensemble cast also includes Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, and Felissa Rose.

Watch the official trailer for Scary Movie below.

Disclosure Day – In Theaters June 12

DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Legendary director Steven Spielberg is a believer, and he wants to make you one too when his latest invades theaters and IMAX next week. Spielberg revisits the idea of extraterrestrials once more; he previously delivered a trio of sci-fi greats with Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977, E.T. in 1982, and War of the Worlds in 2005.

The vague synopsis for Disclosure Day reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp.

Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man, The Crown), Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple), and two-time Oscar® nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Watch the official trailer for Disclosure Day below.

Find Your Friends – On Shudder June 12

An all girls trip into the desert descends into violence in intense thriller Find Your Friends, set to make its Shudder debut on a very crowded June 12.

In the film, “Amber and her four best friends flee Los Angeles for a girls’ trip in Joshua Tree, only to find themselves unwelcome in a desert town simmering with quiet hostility. As isolation sets in and encounters with aggressive locals grow more threatening, festering resentments within the group begin to surface. What begins as fun and reckless escape spirals into a violent struggle for control and survival, as past wounds and present dangers collide in a night that turns their trip into a revenge-fueled nightmare.”

Bella Thorne (The Babysitter), Chloe Cherry (“Euphoria”), Helena Howard (I Saw the TV Glow), Sophia Ali (Uncharted), Zion Moreno (“Gossip Girl”), and Chris Bauer (“True Blood”) star in the feature debut by writer/director Izabel Pakzad.

Watch the official trailer for Find Your Friends below.

I Am Frankelda – On Netflix June 12

I Am Frankelda. Cr. Netflix © 2026.

Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature film delivers meticulous, handmade artistry from Arturo Ambriz and Roy Ambriz, protégés of Academy Award-winner Guillermo del Toro, and celebrates a unique world of monsters. It also arrives exclusively on Netflix on June 12 (our review).

Here’s the synopsis: “In 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a gifted writer whose dark tales are ignored and dismissed. Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, even as many try to silence her. But when she is thrust into her subconscious, the very monsters she created come to life.

“Guided by Herneval, a tormented prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, she must restore balance between fiction and reality before both realms collapse. Meanwhile, the sinister writer Procustes and his conspirators plot to seize control. As Frankelda and Herneval grow closer, their bond becomes both a strength and a curse.

“To rewrite their fate, she must confront a love that defies existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces consume her imagination and reveal horrors beyond her creation.”

Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., and Luis Leonardo Suarez lead the voice cast.

Watch the official trailer for I Am Frankelda below.

Kraken – In Select Theaters & on Digital June 12

A monstrous myth comes to life in Norwegian creature feature Kraken, out in limited theaters and VOD on the busiest day of the month in terms of new horror releases.

Pål Øie (The Tunnel) directs from a script by Vilde Eide, Kjersti Jelen Rasmussen, and Natasha Arthur.

In the film, unnatural behavior in wild salmon, followed by inexplicable deaths in Norway’s deepest fjord, points to the mythical Kraken. The ancient, multi-armed monster has awakened, ready to crush everything that moves or makes a sound.

Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Jon Erik Myre, Hans Morten Hansen, Steinar Klouman Hallert, and Filip Bargee Ramberg star.

Watch the official trailer for Kraken below.

Leviticus – In Theaters June 19

Leviticus is a strong debut with an incisive voice at the helm,” I wrote in my review of one of this summer’s most anticipated releases that sees a vicious curse wreak havoc on young lovers and their conservative community. The latest from NEON arrives in theaters in the back half of June.

Joe Bird (Talk to Me) and Stacy Clausen play star-crossed teenage boys who must escape a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire most — each other.

Mia Wasikowska (Crimson Peak), Jeremy BlewittEwen Leslie (The Nightingale), and Davida McKenzie (Silent Night) round out the cast of horror movie Leviticus.

The film comes from writer-director Adrian Chiarella.

Watch the official trailer for Leviticus below.

Rose of Nevada – In Select Theaters June 19

Rose of Nevada

Enys Men filmmaker Mark Jenkin is back with a new hallucinatory, shot-on-film folk horror nightmare, the time-traveling Rose of Nevada arriving in select theaters.

In the horror film, “Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it.”

Rose of Nevada was written, directed, edited, and scored by Jenkin, who shot the film on a 16mm Bolex camera.

George MacKay and Callum Turner star.

Watch the official trailer for Rose of Nevada below.

Hold the Fort – On Digital June 23

Hold the Fort Teaser - Hold the Fort review

Those in the mood for a scrappy indie horror comedy that rails against the insanity of HOAs should find much to revel in when Hold the Fort arrives on VOD on June 23. Witches, werewolves, and mayhem ensue.

In the film, “Lucas and Jenny think their life is finally coming together when the couple become homeowners. Little do they know that their new house comes with a big catch. Lucas and Jenny soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when they become trapped in a battle between their Homeowners Association and an onslaught of monsters from hell. The horror-comedy takes the timely concern of home-ownership and wraps this up in an entertaining action-packed thrill ride.

William Bagley writes and directs the film starring Chris Mayers (Adult Swim Yule Log), Haley Leary (The Walking Dead), Levi Burdick, and Julian Smith.

Watch the official trailer for Hold the Fort below.

Hungry – On Digital June 23

The wildly unofficial adaptation of Hungry Hungry Hippos comes home to VOD after an extremely limited theatrical run. Rob Hunter called the animal attack flick “a terrific little survival thriller about an angry, angry hippo instead” in his review.

Hungry follows thrill-seeking tourists on a riverboat tour through the treacherous Louisiana swamplands. Lured off the beaten path by the promise of an exclusive adventure, they soon find themselves fighting for survival against a ravenous hippopotamus lurking beneath the bayou’s murky waters.

Madison Davenport (It’s What’s Inside), Tracey Bonner (Greenland), Michel Curiel (“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”), Jim Meskimen (“Parks and Recreation”), Samantha Coughlan (Arcadian), Olivia Bernstone (Fighting with My Family), River Codack (“Happy Face”), and Joaquim de Almeida (Desperado) star.

James Nunn (Shark Bait, One Shot) wrote and directed.

Watch the official trailer for Hungry below.

Strung – On Peacock June 26

Producers Tyler Perry and Jason Blum have joined forces on this Peacock original, promising all sorts of twisty psychological turns.

In the film, “A talented violinist takes a prestigious job as a music tutor for the gifted daughter of an influential and enigmatic family. As she becomes entangled in their opulent world, unsettling secrets begin to surface, forcing her to question her safety, her dreams, and even her sanity.”

Malcolm D. Lee (Scary Movie 5, Space Jam: A New Legacy) directs from a script written by Alan B. McElroy (Wrong Turn, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers).

Chloe Bailey (“Swarm“), Lynn Whitfield (Jaws: The Revenge), Lucien Laviscount (“Scream Queens”), Anna Diop (Us), Coco Jones (Vampires vs. the Bronx), Langley Kirkwood (“Banshee”), and Romy Woods star.

Watch the official trailer for Strung below.

A stop-motion film from directors Arturo Ambriz and Roy Ambriz — protégés of Academy Award-winner Guillermo del Toro – I Am Frankelda is billed as the first ever full length stop motion movie from Mexico, and the handmade artistry is coming to Netflix this June.

Watch the stunning official trailer for I Am Frankelda below.

The history-making stop-motion film is a dark fantasy set in a world of monsters, and it’s being released in select theaters as well as streaming only on Netflix on June 12, 2026.

The directors said in a joint statement, “As brothers, we grew up inventing worlds together, drawing, playing, imagining. Over time we understood that fictional characters were not only companions but guides. Sometimes they felt closer than the people around us. They provided us courage, wisdom, and solace. We believe fiction is not an escape from reality but a way of understanding it. A way of converting truth into palatable chunks. I Am Frankelda comes from a lifelong love of storytelling.

“At the heart of the film is the relationship between Frankelda and Herneval: creator and creation, voice and echo. We are drawn to the mystery of ideas. We do not know if we invent them or if they find us. We only know that when they arrive, they ask to be brought into the world.

“This film is a dream for us. It holds everything we have loved since childhood: monsters, drama, music, color, intensity, culture and worldbuilding. We are moved by characters who feel deeply, who struggle, who transform. Frankelda is about a creator who insists on being heard, even when everything around her says no.”

Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., and Luis Leonardo Suarez lead the voice cast.

Meagan Navarro writes in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature is a macabre beauty.” Meagan also notes in her review, “I Am Frankelda is a gothic fantasy feature whose boundless creativity is matched by its ambition.”

I Am Frankelda (Soy Frankelda), the history-making stop-motion film from directors Arturo and Roy Ambriz, is unleashing its monstrous bedtime stories on Netflix very soon.

The dark fantasy set in a world of monsters releases in select theaters and begins streaming on Netflix on June 12.

“To rewrite their fate, she must confront a love that defies existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces consume her imagination and reveal horrors beyond her creation.”

The Ambriz brothers, as protégés of Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro, crafted the film with del Toro serving as a creative guide to the filmmakers.

Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., and Luis Leonardo Suarez lead the voice cast.

I wrote in my Fantasia review of I Am Frankelda for Bloody Disgusting, “It’s a gothic fantasy feature whose boundless creativity is matched by ambition, so much so that it can barely contain its dense storytelling.”

More specifically, I Am Frankelda is a stunning work of DIY art: “There’s no shortage of colors, textures, and techniques on display to immerse viewers in the vibrant realm of nightmares personified, from the hairy arachnid legs of Procustes to a mesmerizing hand-painted montage. The Ambriz brothers’ feature directorial debut is pure DIY artistry.”

Look for Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature to arrive on the streamer in just a few weeks.

In the wake of its North American premiere at Fantasia last summer, Netflix has announced the acquisition of I Am Frankelda (Soy Frankelda), the history-making stop-motion film from directors Arturo and Roy Ambriz. Netflix is planning to release the film globally in 2026.

Developed by the Ambriz brothers and their Mexico City-based studio, Cinema Fantasma, the film marks a milestone as Mexico’s first-ever feature-length stop-motion production.

The Ambriz brothers, as protégés of Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro, crafted the film with del Toro serving as a creative guide to the filmmakers.

Guillermo del Toro said in a statement today, “Frankelda is a landmark in Mexican Stop-Motion animation and a true triumph of vision, tenacity and love for the craft.”

Meagan Navarro wrote in her Fantasia review of I Am Frankelda for Bloody Disgusting, “Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature is a macabre beauty with impossibly designed characters and an abundance of passion for monsters, even if a bit unwieldy.”

Brothers Rodolfo and Arturo Ambriz, proteges of Pinocchio filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, expand their imaginative, monster-filled world of “Frankelda’s Book of Spooks” into I Am Frankelda, Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature. A young orphaned writer traverses the spooky world she created to face her monsters in a bid to restore the balance between fact and fiction, leading to an epic quest of self-discovery. It’s a gothic fantasy feature whose boundless creativity is matched by ambition, so much so that it can barely contain its dense storytelling.

The recently orphaned and headstrong Francisca Imelda (Mireya Mendoza) is the type of storyteller whose writing is so powerful that it’s breathed life into the nightmarish realm that’s long inhabited by her spooky tales. If only 19th-century publishers were interested in gothic tales of nightmares personified, from a young girl no less.

That doesn’t just erode Francisca’s confidence in reality, but it unwittingly affects her fictional land of Spooks, too. While her imagination fuels this alternate realm, which in turn provides nightmare fuel to others, it’s in danger of being forgotten. With the land’s tales going stale from Royal Nightmarer, Procustes (Luis Leonardo Suarez), the denizens face extinction. Prince of Spooks Herneval (Arturo Mercado, Jr.) transports Francisca’s spirit into his world to save them all, blurring fantasy and reality in the process.

Herneval

I Am Frankelda isn’t just ambitious for the sheer scope of its artistry, delivering a dizzying number of intricately hand-crafted set pieces of pure fantasy, but for its narrative approach. A simple fairy tale setup, not unlike Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, introduces a young woman at an internal crossroads as an aspiring writer who’s arrived at an age where endless imagination is perceived as childish. That’s bad news for the Spooks, who provide an epic fantasy story within the story as Procustes enlists the Chiefs of the Seven Clans to stage a coup against Herneval’s parents and crossover into the living world of existence.

Throw in a budding romance between Herneval and Francisca and sprawling mythology meant to further flesh out dense worldbuilding, and I Am Frankelda nearly buckles under the weight of its own lore as the runtime stretches to nearly two hours. A lot of exposition delivered at the outset makes for a bumpy introduction, too. Yet even when I Am Frankelda‘s ambition works against it narratively, creating some pacing lulls in the process, it’s near impossible not to be wowed by the film’s technical merits.

There’s no shortage of colors, textures, and techniques on display to immerse viewers in the vibrant realm of nightmares personified, from the hairy arachnid legs of Procustes to a mesmerizing hand-painted montage. The Ambriz brothers’ feature directorial debut is pure DIY artistry.

I Am Frankelda set

It’s that artistry and stop-motion precision that carries audiences through some of the densely plotted parts, along with Mendoza’s vibrant voice acting. Her Francisca, turned Frankelda, is as formidable as the villainous monsters eager to invade the real world. That’s especially good news considering that Francisca’s epic journey comes to an abrupt end that feels more setup for continuation than proper closure.

But as far as firsts go, Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature is a macabre beauty with impossibly designed characters and an abundance of passion for monsters, even if a bit unwieldy.

I Am Frankelda made its North American premiere at Fantasia. Release info TBD.

The Fantasia International Film Festival will be celebrating its 29th edition with another densely packed slate of events and programming running from July 17 through August 3, 2025, returning to the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas and presented by MELS, with additional screenings and events at Montreal’s Cinéma du Musée.

The festival’s full lineup will be announced in early July, but in the meantime, Fantasia 2025 has revealed a select first wave of premiere titles. Highlights include Influencers, writer-director Kurtis David Harder‘s follow up to his 2022 thriller. Actor Al Pacino‘s daughter, film producer Julie Pacino, makes her feature directorial debut with the Lynchian I Live Here Now. From the director behind Hot Tub Time Machine and multiple episodes of “Santa Clarita Diet,” Steve Pink, comes an unconventional sci-fi comedy Terrestrial. The Adams family (Hellbender) is back with Mother of Flies, desrcribed as a personal dark fairy tale. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for wave one.

The first wave of select titles, from the press release:

TERRESTRIAL

Terrestrial

As director of the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE films, ACCEPTED, and ABOUT LAST NIGHT, and the co-writer of HIGH FIDELITY and GROSSE POINT BLANK, Steve Pink has made a distinctive name for himself with individualistic comedy works that ooze personality. Now, he’s exploring darker edges of his sensibilities with TERRESTRIAL, a provocative thriller with unconventional comedy and sci-fi elements, still rooted in character and behavior, but filtered through paranoia and fear. A reunion weekend spirals out of control for four college friends when the host (Jermaine Fowler, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU) a science fiction writer on the verge of newfound success, fights to maintain his sense of reality in the face of sudden, uncanny dangers. Fowler is brilliant here and is flanked by a cast that includes James Morosini (I LOVE MY DAD), Pauline Chalamet (SEX LIFE OF COLLEGE GIRLS), Edy Modica (JURY DUTY), with Rob Yang (SUCCESSION) and Brendan Hunt (TED LASSO).  World Premiere.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH A Z-GRADE DIRECTOR IN BROOKLYN

I fell in love

Screen star Shina Mizuhara has lost her passion for filmmaking and is now a rude and cynical mean machine. She decides to travel to New York with her perfect boyfriend who dumps her on arrival, leaving Shina without her wallet and cellphone. Speaking only Japanese, she meets Jack, a passionate z-grade director. He and his crew will convince her to star in their next film. Prolific producer/writer/director/MacGyver Kenichi Ugana (THE GESUIDOUZ) shares his love for Independent horror filmmaking and underground culture in the smart, hilarious, and deeply touching romantic comedy I FELL IN LOVE WITH A Z-GRADE DIRECTOR IN BROOKLYN. Actress Ui Mihara (LESSON IN MURDER) delivers a glorious performance as Shina, conveying her journey to regain lost passion with moving honesty and precision. Estevan Muñoz perfectly embodies the spontaneity and charm of Jack. Fans of Jim Jarmusch, Kevin Smith, and obscure horror gems alike will adore this soulful and somehow quite bloody rom-com! World Premiere.

 I LIVE HERE NOW

I Live Here Now

With her feature debut I LIVE HERE NOW, Julie Pacino plunges us into a vibrant and nightmarish psychodrama that reverberate with echoes of David Lynch, Dario Argento, and the Coen brothers. Starring Lucy Fry (BRIGHT) as Rose, a woman haunted by trauma and trapped in a motel where reality unravels, the film blurs the lines between past and present, dream and waking life, captured in vivid 16mm. The film pulses with competing anxieties: the pursuit of perfection, the weight of generational trauma, and the invisible fist of capitalism tightening its grip around the necks of its characters. Featuring an all-star supporting cast including Madeline Brewer (CAM), Sheryl Lee (TWIN PEAKS), Cara Seymour (ADAPTATION.), and an exceptionally slimy Matt Rife, I LIVE HERE NOW marks the emergence of a bold new voice in genre cinema. World Premiere.

YA BOY KONGMIN! THE MOVIE

Ya Boy Kongmin

Zhuge Kongmin, the legendary military strategist of China’s War of the Three Kingdoms, has been inexplicably reincarnated in modern-day Tokyo. He’s now managing the career of a young amateur singer, Eiko. Convinced that her music could bring about universal peace, Kongmin engages in a series of schemes to get Eiko a place in a high-stakes pop-music competition. However, he who seeks peace must prepare for war… Created by writer Tato Yotsuba and manga artist Ryo Ogawa, the YA BOY KONGMIN! franchise has seen huge success as a manga, anime, and live-action TV series, so it was only a matter of time before this strange and hilarious tale found its way to cinemas, and luckily, it’s done so under the dynamic helm of director Shuhei Shibue. Featuring exhilarating performances by J-pop icons such as Avantgardey, Avu-chan from Queen Bees with renowned pianist Kamei Masaya, and Korean band &TEAM, and with a theme song by Lilas Ikuta from the group YOASOBI, YA BOY KONGMIN! THE MOVIE will thrill audiences as its hero pulls out all the stops to win. North American Premiere.

INFLUENCERS

Influencers

Just when you thought it was safe to travel again, CW pops into your feed and activates your FOMO. After 2022’s smash hit INFLUENCER, Kurtis David Harder takes us to the South of France with dark persuasions and fatal outcomes. Starring the one and only Cassandra Naud as the mysterious chameleon CW, there’s no imposter syndrome here! Along with her fantastic co-stars, Veronica Long (BILLY THE KID) and Jonathan Whitesell (HAPPY FACE), they bring a new timeline and sicker-than-ever plans as CW opens her heart to a beautiful new girlfriend, played by Lisa Delamar (SURVIVE). This time, jealousy rears its ugly head as CW locks in on a popular British Influencer named Charlotte (Georgina Campbell, BARBARIAN, LOVELY, DARK AND DEEP), who throws a wrench in her anniversary plans with Diane. Gorgeous cinematography, nasty twists, and an outcome you won’t want to miss, INFLUENCERS will make you fact-check your socials forever! Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

THE WOMAN

The Woman

An innocent exchange of strawberries and a secondhand appliance takes a very dark turn for Sun-kyung when it precedes her classmate’s suspicious suicide, and puts her on the trail of a mysterious, sinister stranger. Hwang Wook, the director of the hysterical, award-winning neo-Western black comedy MASH VILLE, an acclaimed World Premiere at last year’s Fantasia, returns to the festival with a new film in a completely different genre. THE WOMAN is a riveting, character-driven psychological thriller, filled with non-stop tension and suspense, thanks to its eerie musical score and stunning cinematography, and boasting an outstanding lead performance by Han Hye-ji. THE WOMAN is yet another excellent slice of independent Korean filmmaking, by a director who needs to be on your radar. World Premiere.

 HOLD THE FORT

Hold the Fort

A HOA turns out to be more troublesome than usual in this wildly amusing, FX-heavy freak-out about newly minted suburbanites unexpectedly forced to take part in a struggle against monstrous forces. Narratives about motley groups of ill-equipped characters battling forces of evil are a staple of the modern horror/comedy world, but HOLD THE FORT, from writer/director William Bagley, is many yuks above the norm. With very funny dialogue, outrageous circumstances, and plenty of stylish splatstick as both the human and inhuman are dispatched in gruesome, sometimes giggle-worthy ways, with heaps of spurting, splashing gore and a nonstop parade of practically-created creatures and zombies. Starring Chris Mayers (OZARK), Haley Leary, sketch comic YouTube creator Julian Smith, and Tordy Clark (GLORIOUS), and featuring a charismatic turn from veteran stunt performer Hamid-Reza Benjamin Thompson (BLACK PANTHER, AVENGERS: ENDGAME). World Premiere.

 THE WELL

The Well

For his narrative feature debut, the Oscar-nominated documentarian Hubert Davis (HARDWOOD, BLACK ICE) looks to the future with a bleak prediction of environmental collapse. As the world’s resources dwindle and a deadly virus keeps people apart, a family protects their fresh water source from outsiders. When a young, injured man disrupts their solitude, and their daughter’s defiance threatens to reveal their precious well to another camp led by a charismatic but steely matriarch, danger brings the two factions together in a thrilling ride. THE WELL sets up a chilling scenario of what could happen in our very near future and is executive-produced by Clement Virgo (BROTHER) and Damon D’Oliveira (WILDHOOD); and stars Arnold Pinnock (THE PORTER), Shailyn Pierre-Dixon (THE BOOK OF NEGROS), Idrissa Sanogo (ROBIN HOOD), and Canadian screen and stage royalty Sheila McCarthy (WOMEN TALKING) as the matriarch Gabriel. Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

HONEKO AKABANE’S BODYGUARDS

Honeko

Despite her popularity, charm, kindness, and sense of justice, schoolgirl Honeko Akabane has hordes of assassins after her, although she doesn’t know it. Her biological father, whom she never met, hires a loud-mouthed young brawler to protect her without her knowledge, because Honeko’s purity and innocence must be maintained. Fortunately, he’s not alone. Winner of Best Director at the Fantasporto film festival, director Jun Ishikawa pulls out all the stops with this exhilarating and hilarious adaptation that perfectly captures the sweet madness of Masamitsu Nigatsu’s manga, brilliantly adapted by scriptwriter Hiroyuki Yatsu (Takashi Miike’s AS THE GODS WILL). The panoply of eccentric characters with formidable and sometimes disturbing talents are played marvelously by an excellent cast of young actors who maintain the light-hearted tone of this hilarious and electrifying action-comedy. North American Premiere.

CHAO

Chao

A junior designer at the leading shipbuilding company might have the key to peaceful relations between humans and merfolk. His role in achieving detente, however, suddenly becomes a lot stranger when the mermaid princess announces that she has selected Stephen as her fiancé! A 21st-century reworking of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid tale set in a psychedelic, cyberpunk Shanghai, the frenzied and fantastical romantic comedy CHAO comes care of that most distinctive and inventive of anime factories, Studio 4ºC. The first full feature film from director Yasuhiro Aoki (BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT, TWEENY WITCHES) took seven years and over 100,000 drawings to bring to life, and the hard work has paid off. CHAO is a daring and dazzling burst of animated brilliance, one that will catapult Aoki and his punky, unconventional style to the top tier of the anime world. Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.

 ANYTHING THAT MOVES

Anything That Moves

Shot in stunning Super 16mm, ANYTHING THAT MOVES is the steamy follow-up feature from director Alex Phillips who made audiences laugh and wretch with 2022’s ALL JACKED UP AND FULL OF WORMSa World Premiere at Fantasia)He’s back with a surreal take on the erotic thriller that strikes the balance between riotous tribute and filthy horror in a film that follows sex worker and bike courier Liam on his adventures making clients happy with orgasms and sandwiches. Liam’s joyful existence is soon interrupted by the arrival of a serial killer, which throws his life into the realm of paranoia and conspiracy, casting a dark shadow over the city of Chicago. In the midst of its juicy gore, bizarre poetry, and switchback storytelling the film features real adult stars Nina Hartley and Ginger Lynn Allen, as well as a brilliant music score by Cue Shop. Underground section. World Premiere.

HELLCAT

Hellcat

A woman (Dakota Gorman) wakes in the back of a moving camper trailer with a badly infected wound. A voice (Todd Terry) from the truck towing it tells her they must reach a mysterious doctor within the hour or she’ll suffer a horrific fate. Thus begins HELLCAT, the feature debut of writer/editor/director Brock Bodell, who previously cut the mind-bending ULTRASOUND (Fantasia 2021), among others. Bodell doesn’t take a wrong turn, delivering a twisty thrill ride of strong characters, shredding tension, and real surprises that takes viewers deep into unexpected places. Featuring SNL’s James Austin Johnson as the voice of a late-night DJ on a supernatural call-in show, and gripping performances from supporting cast Jordan Mullins and Liz Atwater. World Premiere.

MOTHER OF FLIES

Mother of Flies

When a young woman faces a deadly diagnosis, she seeks dark magic from a witch in the woods… but every cure has costs. Written and directed by John and Zelda Adams and Toby Poser (The Adams Family), who also star, shot, edited, and scored, MOTHER OF FLIES is the latest creation from the filmmaking family behind such singular landmarks as THE DEEPER YOU DIG, HELLBENDER, and WHERE THE DEVIL ROAMS, each of which has World Premiered at Fantasia. Described by the filmmakers as their fairytale manipulation of the darkly shadowed, yet love-lined pathways between a human life and death, MOTHER OF FLIES is an extraordinary work of personal genre storytelling, gestated through the family’s own experiences battling and surviving cancer. It stands with the strongest of their work, a poetic, haunting, and moving film that glows with otherworldly imagination, exploring the concept of necromancy in connection with two women who have very intimate relationships with death. World Premiere.

BURNING

Burning

One stormy night, a fire engulfs a family home. In a nearby convenience store, neighbors gossip and speculate: was it black magic, a woman’s madness, or a man crushed by life? Director Radik Eshimov, an emerging Kyrgyz talent known for blending sharp social commentary with humor in hits like EL EMNE DEIT, steps boldly into new territory with the suspenseful BURNING. Anchored by standout performances from its three leads, Aysanat Edigeeva (TAXI), Ömürbek Izrailov (DEAL AT THE BORDER), and Kyrgyz Republic People’s Artist Kalicha Seydalieva, BURNING delivers a gripping mystery told in true RASHOMON fashion. Listen closely, sift through the lies, and decide for yourself: Who really started the fire? North American Premiere.

THE BEARDED GIRL

The Bearded Girl

Jody Wilson captures the charm of a fairy tale with a Western sensibility in THE BEARDED GIRL. Cleo is ready to spread her wings and, tired of tradition and feeling like an oddball, she leaves her sheltered carnival life to find love and adventure. Starring Anwen O’Driscoll of BET and YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER as the next generation of sword-swallowing bearded women and MAD MEN’s Jessica Paré as her overbearing mother, Wilson takes her personal experience growing up in Western Canada as a nonconformist to create a confident first feature that highlights queer themes with dry humor and sensitivity. Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

I AM FRANKELDA

I Am Frankelda

The task of crafting Mexico’s very first stop-motion animated feature film could not have fallen to four more worthy hands than those of Rodolfo and Arturo Ambriz. Proteges of Guillermo del Toro, the brothers gained widespread recognition with the short film REVOLTOSO (Fantasia 2016), demonstrating daring ideas and a bedeviled attention to detail. Further acclaim arrived in 2021 with FRANKELDA’S BOOK OF SPOOKS, a five-episode miniseries on Cartoon Network Latin America and HBO Max, introducing the phantom author Frankelda and her companion Herneval, an enchanted book. It turns out that the most astonishing tale the two have to tell is their own! The dazzling I AM FRANKELDA explores the challenging childhood of Francisca Imelda, and how she came to befriend Herneval, prince of the realm that lies on the other side of our dreams. Discover that world of weirdness and wonder for yourself as a milestone of animation history comes to life on Fantasia’s big screen! Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.

THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH

The Last Woman on Earth
Hanah’s pitch for her film school project, a satirical revenge story against men, isn’t going over well with her classmates. Especially Cheol, who accuses her of misandry (which she doesn’t deny). Cheol, meanwhile, can’t get funding for his own film because of the lack of female perspective in his script. A very fraught creative partnership begins. Yeum Moon-kyoung and Lee Jong-min star together in what’s also their feature directorial debut, THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH a quirky and immensely entertaining comedy about the unique world of filmmaking and the challenges of gender equality in cinematic storytelling. The dynamic between Yeum and Lee, as well as the highly imaginative B-movie energy of the film-within-the-film scenes, will paste a smile on your face throughout the characters’ creative process. International Premiere.

A GRAND MOCKERY

A Grand Mockery

A GRAND MOCKERY, the feature debut from co-directors Adam C. Briggs and Sam Dixon, is a grimy, experimental descent into Australia’s dark underbelly, rendered in the raw textures of 8mm film. Starring Dixon as Josie, a man plagued by mental illness, addiction, and compulsion, the film follows his increasingly horrific, near-ritualistic wandering from Brisbane’s mundane outskirts to the sublime horrors of the Sunshine Coast. With a tone that veers from darkly funny to nightmarishly surreal, the film channels the disorienting psychology of its outcast protagonist. A technical triumph of underground cinema, A GRAND MOCKERY transforms the grain of 8mm into something painterly and visceral, evoking Francis Bacon’s dread-soaked visions while building a phantasmagoric world of blurred realities, hypnotic soundscapes, and cinematic obsession. At once grotesque and poetic, it’s a film that pulses with human chaos and defies categorization. Underground section. International Premiere.

MONONOKE THE MOVIE: CHAPTER II – THE ASHES OF RAGE

Mononoke

After the first film’s sold-out world premiere at last year’s Fantasia, the mysterious Medicine Seller is back for another adventure as director Kenji Nakamura continues his inspired revival of his pop-psychedelic, paranormal-procedural anime phenomenon. The first chapter’s wildly inventive approach to design and technique, immersing the viewer in an overwhelming whirlwind of Edo-period iconography, earned MONONOKE THE MOVIE: PHANTOM IN THE RAIN a Satoshi Kon Award for Best Animated Feature, and its sequel is no less daring, dynamic, and visually dazzling. It digs even deeper into the secrets of a paradise poisoned by patriarchal cruelty, where women are reduced to mere vessels for the offspring of their social betters, for their own families’ cynical ambitions… or for the vengeful spirits of others wronged in the past. Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.
