Two recent theatrical nightmares have been unleashed on Digital outlets at home this week, while a blood-soaked genre sequel is bringing action-packed mayhem to the big screen.

Here’s all the new horror released from November 17 – November 23, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

There’s a beautiful, isolated house in Joshua Tree for young adults looking to get away. The only problem? The Carpenter is stalking the grounds. And he’s taking no prisoners.

Killer Rental from directors Ben Hausdorff and Jonathan Kadin is now available on traditional VOD outlets as well as streaming exclusively on Bloody Disgusting’s Screambox.

In Killer Rental, “Two couples arrive one night and find a mysterious video tape of the last group of friends who vacationed here… a diverse bunch looking to party under the desert sun and stars. But secrets soon emerge and relationships fracture, all under the watch of hidden cameras recording their every move. When one of them mysteriously disappears, the rest are left stranded, ultimately discovering that a deranged killer stalks. Meet The Carpenter… horror’s newest icon, with a unique set of tools and a twisted plan of his own.”

Killer Rental aims to provide “authenticity, fun, creepiness and a ton of scares.”

Dream Eater review

Fresh off the film’s limited theatrical release, Eli Roth’s new company The Horror Section has brought the found footage film Dream Eater to at-home digital outlets this week.

Co-written and co-directed by Jay Drakulic, Mallory Drumm, and Alex Lee Williams, Dream Eater stars Williams and Drumm. The Horror Section teases, “Blending raw, documentary-style realism with escalating tension and scares, Dream Eater delivers an unshakable nightmare that lingers long after the final frame.”

The story follows Mallory (Mallory Drumm), a documentary filmmaker, who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her boyfriend Alex (Alex Lee Williams) to document his violent parasomnia. As his condition worsens, Mallory suspects something more sinister may be at play. As the nightmares escalate, so do the scares, right through the final frame.

“I vividly remember every movie that truly terrified me. I remember standing on 25th street in New York City when my friend Kevin Foxe handed me a VHS of a film he had produced, which had just gotten into Sundance, called The Blair Witch Project, and that night I had to sleep with the lights on,” Roth said in a statement. “I remember watching a screener of Paranormal Activity during the filming of Inglorious Basterds in my apartment in Berlin, and I was so freaked out that I had to give it to Quentin to traumatize him as well.

“And then there was Dream Eater, watching this movie alone, in my house, and turning on the lights because it was that scary. It has been so long since I have been truly terrified by a film to such a degree that I had almost forgotten what it felt like. What these three filmmakers have pulled is not just remarkable on a low-budget DIY filmmaking level; they achieve the holy grail of horror, which is to make a movie that absolutely terrifies you. I was so blown away that I sent the film to everyone at The Horror Section, and we all agreed that this is ‘the one.’ I believe Dream Eater will be the scariest film of the year and truly has the potential to break out to be the next Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project.”

Shelby oaks cuts

The feature debut of YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann, Shelby Oaks is now available on Digital to rent ($9.99) or purchase ($19.99) at home from distributor NEON.

Drawing comparisons to The Blair Witch Project and Hereditary, Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks incorporates found footage elements in a traditional narrative.

It follows a film crew who uncovers a disturbing new lead in a woman’s obsessive search for her missing sister, steering her into a terrifying mystery at the hands of an unknown evil.

Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Keith David, Robin Bartlett, Michael Beach, Sarah Durn, and Derek Mears star in the horror movie Shelby Oaks.

Shelby Oaks is the highest-funded horror film in Kickstarter history with over $1.3 million raised. Mike Flanagan joined the project as an executive producer via his Intrepid Pictures.

From Dark Star Pictures and director Devin Lawrence, indie horror movie The Disinvited puts a nightmarish spin on the concept of wedding crashing. It’s now available on VOD.

The film is described as “a tense, darkly comic high-desert thriller.”

“Against his—or anyone’s—better judgment, Carl crashes an event where he’s no longer welcome, triggering a single day of betrayal, violence, heartache, and exes who should never reunite.

“When he discovers he isn’t the only unwanted guest in the desert, Carl must decide whether to save himself or risk everything for those who wronged him.”

Sam Daly, Dani Reynolds, Ryan Vincent, D.K. Uzoukwu, Alana Johnston, Samantha Jean Kwok, and Ronnie Gene Blevins star in The Disinvited.

The boundaries between life, death, and illusion will blur in The Grove, which was released on digital outlets at home via Filmhub today. Said to recall the works of Jordan Peele and M. Night Shyamalan, the genre-bending horror thriller fuses elements of psychological suspense, supernatural mystery, and science fiction allegory into a thought-provoking narrative.

In The Grove, “after a Black Ops soldier goes under an experiment to create a better life for him and his fiancée, his homecoming turns tragic when he stops taking his medication, descending into feral madness. What was supposed to be a relaxing lake house getaway with friends becomes a fight for survival, testing the limits of love and sanity.”

Acoryé White and Patrycja Kepa write and direct for Anchored Lens Productions.

Acoryé White also stars with Carl Anthony Payne II, Psalms, Haley Sims, Graham Edmonds. The film’s supporting cast includes Guxci, Anuschka van Lent, Alestair Shu, Jesus Venegas, Jolena Wu, Ethan Melisano, and Lucky Johnson.

The star of Damien Leone’s original Terrifier movie, Jenna Kanell is back in the Christmas horror-comedy We’re So Dead, which was released onto VOD outlets today.

The villain in this one? A Christmas Karen.

In We’re So Dead, “A huge party has canceled and dashed a restaurant staff’s hopes of a big holiday tip. Surviving the shift becomes much more than side work and a deep clean, when a Karen, unhappy with her service, goes on a spree to murder the entire staff.”

Ken MacLaughlin directed the holiday horror comedy.

The 1960s Eurospy throwback Reflection in a Dead Diamond will stream December 5 exclusively on Shudder, but for now it’s playing in select theaters this weekend.

Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani — the husband-and-wife filmmaking duo behind Amer, The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears, and Let the Corpses Tan — write and direct.

In the film, when the mysterious woman in the room next door disappears, a debonair 70-year-old ex-spy living in a luxury hotel on the Côte d’Azur is confronted by the demons and darlings of a lurid past in which movie making, memories, and madness collide.

The film stars Golden Globe-winning Italian actor Fabio Testi, Yannick Renier, Koen De Bouw, Maria De Medeiros, Céline Camara and introduces newcomer Thi Mai Nguyen.

Reflection in a Dead Diamond debuted in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to play notable festivals including Fantastic Fest and the Tribeca Film Festival.

Fabio Testi (What Have You Done to Solange?), Yannick Renier, Koen De Bouw (Loft), Maria de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction), and Thi Mai Nguyen star in this wild slice of cinema.

Writer/Director Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports, Big Game) is back with action sequel SISU: Road to Revenge, which was released in theaters nationwide beginning today.

The sequel promises a “wall-to-wall cinematic action event.”

In the sequel, “Returning to the house where his family was brutally murdered during the war, ‘the man who refuses to die’ (Jorma Tommila) dismantles it, loads it on a truck, and is determined to rebuild it somewhere safe in their honor.

“When the Red Army commander who killed his family (Stephen Lang from Don’t Breathe) comes back hellbent on finishing the job, a relentless, eye-popping cross-country chase ensues – a fight to the death, full of clever, unbelievable action set pieces.”

Richard Brake (3 from Hell) also stars in the mega-violent sequel.

The original 2023 action movie introduced a solitary prospector during the last desperate days of WWII as he crosses paths with a nasty bunch of Nazis. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. They’ve severely underestimated the man and how far he’ll go, or kill, to get it back.

With Shelby Oaks, writer/director Chris Stuckmann made the leap from YouTube to theatrical film. But his feature directorial debut, which is now playing in theaters, doesn’t look the same as it did when it played the festival circuit in 2024.

Shelby Oaks follows Mia (Camille Sullivan), a woman who has been obsessively searching for her younger sister Riley (Sarah Durn) for more than a decade. The missing woman was the host of a popular YouTube channel called “Paranormal Paranoids” and disappeared along with her three co-hosts while filming in the titular derelict town.

While the murdered bodies of the other three hosts were eventually discovered, Mia lacks closure because Riley’s disappearance remains unsolved. As her search is captured via a documentary crew, Mia’s marriage to Robert (Brendan Sexton III) begins to buckle under the burden of her obsession. Things only get worse when a new lead thrusts Mia back into investigative mode with renewed – and dangerous – vigour.

Shelby Oaks played at a variety of festivals last year, including Fantasia Film Festival (where I reviewed it for Bloody Disgusting). Since then, however, the Kickstarter-funded film was acquired for distribution by Neon, picked up a producing credit from Mike Flanagan, and received $1M from Neon for reshoots to help realize Stuckmann’s vision.

Having watched the new cut, here’s what is different in the version now available to audiences. Warning: Some spoilers to follow.

Face Peel

The film opens with text explaining the circumstances of Riley’s disappearance and the context for how the footage was recovered. We see the young blonde cowering in a cabin bedroom before venturing off-camera into the hall.

Later, this sequence is repeated, but Mia has discovered another tape (courtesy of Charlie Talbert’s Wilson Miles), which includes additional footage that features more graphic shots of Riley’s dead co-hosts. In the original cut of the film, these murders were only briefly glimpsed, and the amount of blood and gore was limited.

In the new cut, there’s a whole new sequence featuring the film’s supernatural protagonist Tarion (played by Derek Mears, as well as David Greathouse and Jon Michael Simpson) ripping the face off one of the men. The camera lingers on the gory practical effect, which is so forceful that the body is lifted off the floor before falling back to the ground…minus a face.

In a post-screening Q&A, Stuckmann explained that reshoots for this sequence alone took a half day to complete (from set-up to clean-up to resetting for additional takes). That was a luxury (both time and money) that the production simply didn’t have the first time around.

Hellhound Action

Shelby Oaks wig

Part of the film’s mythology includes hellhounds that protect Tarion and its progeny. While there were dogs in the festival cut of the film, Stuckmann elaborated that the additional funds allowed them to bring the dogs back for more action. Fun fact: the hounds are real, not CGI; they come from Sweden; and they were trained to perform very specific actions in the film.

Mia first spots a dog eying her when she’s out on the porch late at night, watching old videos of her sister. Later, she’s confronted by a dog at the prison outside Wilson Miles’ jail cell. It’s possible that this brief scene has been touched up because the effect of the monster’s hand resting on the dog looks better. Sullivan’s hair is also styled differently in select shots from this sequence, which matches her hair from the reshot climax (see below).

The biggest new addition, however, is the film’s final sequence. After Riley has been rescued from Norma (Robin Bartlett) ‘s cottage, Mia and Riley fight over Riley’s demon seed baby. In the climax, Riley plummets through the cracked bedroom window and, as Mia watches and screams from above, her sister’s still alive body is attacked by *multiple* hellhounds who rip her to shreds.

My memory is slightly hazy about how much of this carnage was visible in the original cut, but in this new version, Stuckmann treats us to close-up shots of the dogs ripping at Riley’s face and body. Much like the face rip from earlier in the film, this gore is much more explicit, and the camera lingers on the glorious practical FX.

Sequel Potential?

Shelby Oaks

It appears that these reshoots have helped the modestly budgeted film, which has garnered mostly positive reviews from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes). Intriguingly, if audiences embrace the film, Stuckmann has some ideas on how to expand Shelby Oaks. In the post-screening Q&A, he confessed that he has not one, but TWO more ideas set in this world.

The first is a sequel in the vein of the original Halloween 2 that would immediately follow the events of the first film as Mia is forced to explain the brutal death of her sister.

The second pitch is a prequel that would explore Norma’s story, including how she came to worship Tarion, gave birth to Wilson Miles, and became a rapist recluse in the woods.

Shelby Oaks is now playing in theaters.

The Long Walk Review

The Long Walk is now available on Digital at home from Lionsgate.

Based on the first novel Stephen King ever wrote, Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) directs the harrowing film from a script by JT Mollner (Strange Darling).

“In a dystopian United States ruled by a totalitarian regime, 50 young men enter an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or risk execution. The contest ends when only one walker remains alive.”

Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) lead an ensemble that includes Garrett Wareing (“Manifest”), Tut Nyout (“The Witcher: Blood Origin”), Charlie Plummer (The Clovehitch Killer), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit), Jordan Gonzalez (“Pretty Little Liars: Origin Sin”), and Joshua Odjick (Welcome to Derry). Mark Hamill (The Life of Chuck), Judy Greer (Halloween), and Josh Hamilton (“The Walking Dead”) also co-star.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Despite an unwavering eye on the dour and ruthless death march and all its grotesqueries, it’s the pervading camaraderie and heart, as well as a tremendous cast, that solidifies this as one of the best King adaptations yet.”

Justin Long (Barbarian) and Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) lead horror-comedy Coyotes from director Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters), now available at home.

In the film, “When a scorching wildfire hits the Hollywood Hills, a family is stranded as their neighborhood is destroyed and their home becomes a blazing prison. Meanwhile, a pack of predatory coyotes disoriented by the fires tighten their perimeter around the house.

“With collapsing roads and no electricity, the family must rely on their courage, resilience, and love for one another to survive both the inferno and the snarling threat outdoors.”

Mila Harris (No Exit), Katherine McNamara (“Shadowhunters”), Brittany Allen (“Dexter: Original Sin”), Keir O’Donnell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and Norbert Leo Butz (The Exorcist: Believer) round out the cast of the killer coyotes horror movie.

Tad Daggerhart (The Expendables 4) and Nick Simon (The Pyramid) wrote the script.

Chain Reactions, a cinematic deep dive into the profound impact and lasting influence of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is now available on VOD from Dark Sky Films.

Master of horror Stephen King, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer), Australian film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, and director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) each discuss their memories and experiences with Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 genre-defining classic.

By crafting a dynamic dialogue between contemporary footage and never-before-seen outtakes and delving into personal impressions triggered by distinct audiovisual formats, the documentary goes to the heart of how a low-budget independent film wormed its way into our collective nightmares and permanently altered the zeitgeist.

Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas, 78/52, Memory: The Origins of Alien) directs.

Daniel Kurland wrote in his review, “Chain Reactions is a love letter to Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its grander impact. It’s also such a glowing celebration of the power of cinema and its ability to open minds and bring people to new worlds, as glib as that may seem.”

Audition and Tokyo Gore Police star Eihi Shiina reunites with Tokyo Gore Police filmmaker Yoshihiro Nishimura for Holy Mother, a bonkers new movie now available on VOD.

Variety describes the film from Void Signal as “a gory showdown involving a silent trans woman fighting a brutal organization with chainsaws, lasers, and non-stop carnage.”

Here’s the full synopsis: “In a dystopian future Japan, a Chinese yakuza gang battles a fascist regime hellbent on erasing those deemed ‘inauthentic.’ Amidst the carnage, a mute woman with pink hair and miraculous healing powers is hailed as the “Holy Mother”—but salvation comes with a side of mutant monsters, sexual creatures, and wall-to-wall gore.”

Yoshihiro Nishimura is known for his gory blasts of insanity including Tokyo Gore Police and Mutant Girls Squad, so we can expect that Holy Mother will be cut from the same cloth.

A local urban legend unleashes a sinister presence in the new found footage horror movie from writer/director Danny Villanueva Jr., What Happened to Dorothy Bell?

Dark Star Pictures brought the film to VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

In What Happened to Dorothy Bell?, “Ozzie Gray (Asya Meadows) is a young woman confronting her own mental health struggles. As Ozzie begins to unpack her trauma, she uncovers unsettling truths about a violent incident from her childhood—when her grandmother, Dorothy Bell, attacked her under mysterious circumstances.

“Her investigation leads her back to a haunted library in her hometown, long tied to a sinister urban legend. There, Ozzie must face buried secrets and an unnerving supernatural presence.”

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and The Dream Child star Lisa Wilcox and Michael Hargrove (Nia DaCosta’s Candyman) star alongside Steven Alonte (The Cathedral), Sargon Odicho, Arlene Arnone, Yera Constable, and J. Anthony Ramos.

Maika Monroe (Longlegs) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Birds of Prey) lead the cast of Hulu’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, a fresh new take on the classic 1990s thriller from director Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman).

The new movie is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Caitlin Morales, an upscale suburban mom who brings a new nanny, Polly Murphy (Maika Monroe), into her home, only to discover she is not the person she claims to be. Watch the trailer for The Hand That Rocks the Cradle below.

Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran also star.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is written by Micah Bloomberg based on a screenplay by Amanda Silver. The producers are Michael Schaefer, Mike LaRocca, and Ted Field, and the executive producers are Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk, and Seth William Meier.

“The studio gave me all the chances to recreate the whole thing and build a new story, new characters, with its own heart. I think that was the best way to honor the original, not try to redo it,” Michelle Garza Cervera told PEOPLE. “We build a whole different kind of thriller.”

The Queen of Black Magic and Dancing Village: The Curse Begins director Kimo Stamboel is back with Indonesian zombie movie The Elixir, and it’s now streaming on Netflix.

In the film, “An elixir unleashes the undead in Wanirejo Village. A family at odds with one another must unite and fight to survive as their hometown collapses.”

Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Marthino Lio, Dimas Anggara, Varen Arianda Calief, Ardit Erwandha, and Claresta Taufan star in Kimo Stamboel’s The Elixir.

“Horror is a proven audience favourite in Thailand and Indonesia. But when it comes to zombie horror, demand has been met by Korean, English, and foreign-language titles,” Malobika Banerji, senior director of content for Southeast Asia at Netflix, said recently. “We wanted to take the thrill of zombies and fuse it with local storytelling, culture, and authenticity.”

Director Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) reteams with Emma Stone for new movie Bugonia, now playing in limited theaters from Focus Features.

The genre-bending black comedy sci-fi thriller expands wide in theaters on October 31.

Emma Stone stars as the high-powered CEO of a major company who is kidnapped by two conspiracy obsessed young men, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, that are convinced she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

After the pair chain her in a basement and come face-to-face with the enemy, the two sides — the tinfoil-hat basement dwellers and the steely, soulless corporate executive — soon find themselves pitched in a battle as viscerally unpredictable as it is unexpectedly moving.

Will Tracy (The Menu) wrote the script, based on Jang Joon-Hwan’s 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet. Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) is among the producers on the project, which also include Lanthimos and Stone. The cast also includes Stavros Halkias as a local police officer and Alicia Silverstone as Plemons’ character’s mother.

Shelby Oaks

Written and directed by YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann in his feature debut, the horror movie Shelby Oaks is now playing in theaters nationwide from NEON.

Drawing comparisons to The Blair Witch Project and Hereditary, the supernatural horror movie incorporates found footage elements into a traditional narrative.

In Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks, “A woman’s obsessive search for her missing sister leads her into a terrifying mystery at the hands of an unknown evil.”

Of particular note, Shelby Oaks is the highest-funded horror film in Kickstarter history with over $1.3 million raised. Following the campaign, Mike Flanagan joined the project as an executive producer via his Intrepid Pictures. Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett, Keith David, and Derek Mears star in the horror movie.

Good Boy Indy

Good Boy, the theatrically-released haunted house movie told from the perspective of a dog, is now available on Digital at home for rental ($9.99) or purchase ($19.99).

Ben Leonberg makes his feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Alex Cannon.

In the film, a loyal dog moves to a rural family home with his owner Todd, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.

Indy the dog stars alongside Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, and Larry Fessenden.

The film scared up $6.6 million at the box office.

Eli Roth’s new company The Horror Section is back on the big screen this weekend with Dream Eater, a found-footage chiller from the Canadian genre trio behind Blind Luck Pictures.

Co-written and co-directed by Jay Drakulic, Mallory Drumm, and Alex Lee Williams and starring Williams and Drumm, the film is now playing in 250-300 theaters nationwide.

Blending raw, documentary-style realism with escalating tension and scares, Dream Eater delivers an unshakable nightmare that lingers long after the final frame – tailor-made for today’s watch-through-your-fingers audiences.

Bone Lake trailer

From Bleecker Street, erotic horror thriller Bone Lake is now available at home.

“A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. In this darkly hilarious and seductive horror story, a dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival.”

Marco Pigossi (“Gen V”), Maddie Hasson (Malignant), Alex Roe (Rings), Andra Nechita (“Fatal Attraction”), Eliane Reis, and Clayton Spencer star in the horror film.

Mercedes Bryce Morgan (Spoonful of Sugar) directs a script by Joshua Friedlander.

Tina Romero Queens of the Dead

George A. Romero’s daughter Tina Romero puts her own unique spin on the zombie apocalypse in Queens of the Dead, and the horror-comedy is now playing in theaters.

In Queens of the Dead, “a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty undead.”

Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Jack Haven (I Saw The TV Glow) and Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) star. The cast also includes Nina West (Drag Race), Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Becca Blackwell (Bros), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), Dominique Jackson (Pose), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), and Eve Lindley (Bros).

“The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can’t be my dad’s daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies,” Romero recently told EW. “I did want this to be a film in which I am paying homage to the world and the monster he created, but I’m also introducing my own voice.”

Romero continued, “It’s very much not a film he would make, but it is using his vocabulary and is playing by his rules. As far as the queer element, on one hand, I just feel like the gays need a zombie film. It’s time that we get to have a big gay zombie movie.”

No amount of followers can protect an influencer from a masked slasher in Glamping.

The Tubi Original horror thriller is now streaming on Tubi.

Niki Koss directs Glamping from a script written by Alexa Garster, based on a short film by Rosemary Idisi, who won Tubi’s first-ever Stubios Greenlight Contest.

In Glamping, “An idyllic weekend getaway takes a terrifying turn when a masked killer disrupts the trip of a wannabe influencer and her friends in Big Bear.”

Rosmeary Idisi stars with Joseph Purcell, Geffen Aviana, Chris Angelis, David Hernandez, Isabella Ward, Annie Grant, Angelique Chapman, and Ian McKellan.

Cambodia’s official Oscar entry for Best International Film at the 98th Academy Awards is the horror movie Tenement, and it’s now available on VOD outlets from Dark Sky Films.

In the film, “Following the death of her mother, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist decides to travel to Cambodia along with her boyfriend, in a quest to find out more about the country her mother fled. She reunites with lost family and moves into the apartment where her mother used to live. As she tries to find out more about her past, she’s confronted with strange events within the building that hint at something darker going on with the residents.

“What first appears as over-caring considerations from the community towards the newcomers soon turns out to be part of a ritual. The residents are preparing a new host for the building’s evil spirit, before it starts killing them once again.”

Tenement was written and directed by Inrasothythep Neth & Sokyou Chea. Thanet Thorn, Yoshihiko Hosoda, Socheata Sveng, Mony Rous, and Katsuya Maiguma star.

During the work week in Barcelona, 1.3 million passengers a day travel along the 76 miles of the metro. Some never see the light of day again, and the rest don’t want to know…

Last Stop: Rocafort St. is now available on VOD from Film Movement.

The Spanish horror thriller is directed by Luis Prieto (Kidnap) from a script he co-wrote with Iván Ledesma (Xtreme) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End).

Here’s the official synopsis: “Newly assigned to work at Rocafort St., one of Barcelona’s quietest subway stops, Laura quickly realizes something is deeply wrong beneath the tracks. Whispers of an urban legend swirl sinisterly around the station, and she soon finds herself haunted by a string of unexplained deaths all pointing to Rocafort.

“When she enlists a disgraced ex-cop to help uncover the truth, the mystery turns deadly. Whatever evil lurks inside the labyrinth of tunnels preys unrelentingly on fear.”

Natalia Azahara, Javier Gutiérrez, and Valeria Sorolla star in the horror film with Xavi Sáez, Francesca Albiol, Aimar Vega, Tatín Revenga, and Celso Bugallo.

Even before anyone had seen a frame of Shelby Oaks, critic and YouTuber Chris Stuckmann‘s feature directorial debut, it became one of the most talked-about horror films in the last five years simply because of the sheer weight of support its concept garnered. Stuckmann’s efforts to crowdfund the film set Kickstarter records, early festival buzz was strong, drew backing from Mike Flanagan‘s Intrepid Pictures, and, after an acquisition by no less a genre titan than Neon, the director even got to go back and tweak the film with new footage.

But what’s most interesting about Shelby Oaks is something baked into its premise, a compelling formalist exercise that allows the film to unfold like a creepy set of nesting dolls. The found footage elements of this story have been heavily emphasized in the film’s marketing – at the Fantastic Fest premiere in September, DVDs of raw DV footage from the story were passed out to attendees – but they are only part of the Shelby Oaks puzzle. Part found footage, part faux documentary, and part traditional narrative feature, Shelby Oaks sets out to strike a delicate balance that plays with three different well-worn horror cinema forms.

It’s all enough to beg the question: How do you even begin to put all of this together?

That’s the task that fell to editors Patrick Lawrence and Brett W. Bachman, who worked closely with Stuckmann to assemble Shelby Oaks into the 90-minute thrill ride hitting theaters this month. Lawrence was on board well before the film ever played before a crowd, while Bachman joined the production after the Neon acquisition and helped Stuckmann to recut things in 2025, but both editors had to work with the same challenges, including hours of raw footage and the film’s effort to play in three cinematic sandboxes at once.

“I remember Chris sharing a conversation he had had with a buddy where he was like, ‘I have this idea to do a fake documentary, but I don’t really know how far I can take it,'” Bachman told Bloody Disgusting. “‘Can I then go into single camera footage? Am I allowed to do that?’ And his buddy was like, ‘Yes, of course, you can do whatever you want! It’s your movie.’ This very much changes on a filmmaker-to-filmmaker basis, and I think with Chris, you’d have to talk to him about this, but I don’t know if he could foresee a version of Shelby that existed solely as a found-footage film or a faux-documentary.”

Shelby Oaks is the story of Mia Brennan (Camille Sullivan), whose sister, paranormal investigator Riley Brennan (Sarah Durn), went missing back in 2008 while filming an episode of her ghost hunting series, Paranormal Paranoids. It’s years later, and Mia is still not ready to give up on finding Riley, so when she comes into possession of a tape that promises more information on how exactly Riley went missing in the nearby Ohio ghost town of Shelby Oaks, she will stop at nothing to find the truth, even if it means walking into the same darkness that took her sister.

We won’t go into all the spoilery details, but the film opens with a found footage peek into terror, then morphs into a faux-documentary about Riley’s disappearance, Mia’s search, and the online sleuthing community that sprang up around the mystery. From there, the film zooms out again to reveal the documentary is still in production, and becomes a traditional narrative feature – with elements of found footage and faux-doc recurring throughout – following Mia’s final search for Riley. Throw in the hours of Paranormal Paranoids footage Stuckmann had previously shot and already uploaded to YouTube, and Shelby Oaks became a towering task for any editor.

documentary within found footage

“There’s a lot. The documentary, in script form, was 30 pages, and in the first cut, was probably closer to 40 minutes [of the movie],” Lawrence explained. “And there’s just a lot of information there, a lot of exposition that sets up Mia and her journey through the rest of the film. So it’s essentially the first act of the film. But there really had to be an examination of not being too precious about all that information.”

As the film came together, notes started to come in, and the temptation to cut down the documentary footage increased. But even with some tweaks to condense things, Stuckmann and Lawrence stuck to their guns on using the faux-documentary angle to set up much of the narrative tension in the film, before Mia heads out on her journey. When Bachman came aboard, it was no longer about condensing, but about enhancing.

“The first 30 minutes were so strong, this documentary sequence was really eloquently prepared, and it just hooks you from a narrative perspective,” Bachman said. “I’d seen so much effort to compress the opening parts of this documentary scene,  and I remember thinking, ‘This is my first impression of the movie. You can really lean into this. You can actually let this thing breathe. You can really just firmly establish right off the bat the tone of this thing.‘ So my first act was actually to make the opening of the movie a little bit longer. Open that up, let that breathe, really set the tone and really ratchet up your sense of dread immediately.”

But the first act wasn’t the only major challenge when it came to the film’s hybrid nature. When Mia receives the tape, featured in the film’s trailers, which leads her to new clues about what happened to Riley, she has to actually sit down and watch the footage. This gives the viewer a scene in which Mia, in the narrative feature portion, is both finding and watching elements of the found footage portion. For the editors, it was all about showing enough of the raw found footage that viewers got the important clues, but not so much that it overshadowed Sullivan’s performance as a grieving sister looking for hope.

“That was the challenge because there is a whole, I don’t know, two-hour-long version of that tape,” Lawrence said. “So it was like, ‘How do we do this in a way where the audience doesn’t get bored with it, that they’re along for the ride and make it still feel like the tape is seamless?’ Obviously we had cuts and glitches and we had some of Mia’s reactions and stuff like that, but we still had to manipulate the tape to where it felt authentic and seamless, even though we were splicing and trying to speed up the journey as they’re going through Shelby Oaks, trying to speed up all that information.“

Stuckmann’s long track record as a critic and commentator, and with his public documentation of the making of Shelby Oaks, means that it’s not difficult to find the film’s influences. Whether it’s Lake Mungo or Noroi: The Curse or The Blair Witch Project, the film’s thematic and tonal touchstones are right there on its sleeve, but even with those in mind, the structure of Shelby Oaks also offered a chance to do something that felt fresh. For Lawrence and Bachman, working with Stuckmann on the film was a chance to work within a certain frame of reference in horror cinema history, but then forge ahead with their own take on familiar formats.

“When it came to the actual influence of the movie, some of these things that come up, whether it be Blair Witch or other influences, those weren’t really discussed [in the edit],” Lawrence said. “A lot of it was just us doing our own thing.”

Shelby Oaks is in theaters everywhere on October 24.

YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann makes his feature debut with the upcoming Shelby Oaks, a horror movie that was making headlines before the cameras even started rolling. Stuckmann turned to crowd-funding to bring the project to life, you may recall, and Shelby Oaks ended up becoming the highest-funded horror film in the history of Kickstarter with over $1 million.

That allowed Stuckmann to bring the deeply personal horror tale to the screen, and Shelby Oaks was subsequently boarded by Mike Flanagan as Executive Producer and acquired for distribution by the indie horror heavyweights over at NEON. It’s a dream scenario for any filmmaker, and Stuckmann isn’t forgetting the backers who made it all happen.

NEON has released a brand new poster for Shelby Oaks this morning that pays tribute to everyone who supported the film’s original crowd-funding campaign. The names of all 14,720 backers have been incorporated into the background, all of them coming together to form a creepy image. Click here to download the full-res image and see if you can spot your own name!

A traditional narrative that incorporates found footage elements, Shelby Oaks hits theaters on October 24.

Can’t wait until then? NEON and Bloody Disgusting are joining forces for a series of free sneak screenings on October 8 in select locations! Here’s everything you need to know.

Shelby Oaks is about missing paranormal investigators, the dark legacy they uncovered, and the far-reaching effects their investigation has as Mia searches for her sister Riley, the lead paranormal investigator, 12 years later. The film’s official synopsis continues…

“As Mia uncovers new and disturbing leads related to Riley’s disappearance, she uncovers evidence of a hidden supernatural evil dating all the way back to her and Riley’s childhood.”

Shelby Oaks has been rated “R” for “violent content/gore, suicide and language.”

NEON previews, “What started as a tale about missing YouTubers eventually transformed into something with deeper, darker implications for its characters, and it wasn’t until post-production, that Stuckmann realized the film was a much more personal project than he had initially conceived. Stuckmann was raised in a faith (Jehovah’s Witness) that practices shunning. At twelve years old, his sister was excommunicated and he was forced to shun her. Cutting off all communication, he was told his sister was ‘spiritually dead.’

“It wasn’t until Stuckmann’s early twenties when he finally escaped the faith, that he reconnected with his sister. It became clear that the story behind Shelby Oaks – about someone’s desperate yearning to find a lost loved one as seemingly insurmountable forces keep them apart – is inspired by his own search for his sister.”

Watch the film’s final official trailer below.

Shelby Oaks is the highest-funded horror film in Kickstarter history with over $1.3 million raised. Following the campaign, Mike Flanagan joined the project as an executive producer via his Intrepid Pictures.

NEON picked up YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann’s debut horror movie Shelby Oaks, and Indiewire reports this weekend that the film will release in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Indiewire’s report also notes that NEON supplied Stuckmann with additional funds to shoot new material after they picked up the movie last year, upping the film’s “gore and violence.”

The outlet details, “The new footage recontextualizes some of the original story, but the name of the game for Stuckmann and Koontz was fleshing out the practical effects.”

Additionally, “Creature actor Derek Mears, famous for playing Jason Voorhees in the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot, joined the cast in an undisclosed role.”

Horror master Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, “The Fall of the House of Usher”) recently came on board the upcoming Shelby Oaks as an executive producer. Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures joined the team as producers.

The cast for Shelby Oaks includes Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter), Brendan Sexton III (Don’t Breathe 2), Michael Beach (If Beale Street Could Talk), Robin Bartlett (Shutter Island), Keith David (The Thing), Charlie Talbert (The Big Short), Emily Bennett (Alone With You) and Sarah Durn (Where the Crawdads Sing).

“Shot as a traditional feature, but with some elements of found footage, Shelby Oaks is a horror film about missing paranormal investigators (the paranormal paranoids), the dark legacy they uncovered, and the far-reaching effects their investigation has as Mia searches for her sister Riley, the lead paranormal investigator, 12 years later.

“As Mia uncovers new and disturbing leads related to Riley’s disappearance, she uncovers evidence of a hidden supernatural evil dating all the way back to her and Riley’s childhood.”

Fresh off the box office success of Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs, which just had the highest opening weekend in the company’s history, NEON has picked up YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann’s debut horror movie Shelby Oaks, Deadline reports this afternoon.

NEON has acquired worldwide rights to the found footage horror movie, which is World Premiering at Fantasia this week. No word yet on a wide release date. Stay tuned for more.

Horror master Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, “The Fall of the House of Usher”) recently came on board the upcoming Shelby Oaks as an executive producer. Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures have joined the team.

The cast for Shelby Oaks will include Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter), Brendan Sexton III (Don’t Breathe 2), Michael Beach (If Beale Street Could Talk), Robin Bartlett (Shutter Island), Keith David (The Thing), Charlie Talbert (The Big Short), Emily Bennett (Alone With You) and Sarah Durn (Where the Crawdads Sing).

So what is Shelby Oaks about, you ask? Here’s the synopsis…

Stuckmann wrote and will be directing Shelby Oaks for Paper Street Pictures.

The Fantasia International Film Festival will be celebrating its 28th edition with another densely packed slate of events and programming running from July 18 through August 4, 2024, returning yet again at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens and events at Montreal’s Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinéma du Musée.

The festival’s full lineup will be announced on July 3, but in the meantime, Fantasia 2024 has revealed a select first wave of premiere titles. With premieres for Chuck Russell’s Witchboard remake, the Mike Flanagan-presented found footage Shelby Oaks, the latest from La Llorona filmmaker Jayro Bustamante and more, Fantasia’s shaping up to have another can’t miss slate of films.

The first wave of select titles, from the press release:

WITCHBOARD

Witchboard

From A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS and the beloved1988 remake of THE BLOB to THE MASK, ERASER, and THE SCORPION KING, director Chuck Russell has no shortage of imaginative fantasy/horror classics under his belt. Now he returns to the genre he’s marked so brilliantly with a radical reinvention of Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 Canadian cult favorite WITCHBOARD. Emily (Madison Iseman, ANNABELLE COMES HOME) and her fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez, Hulu’s Only Murderers in the Building) discover an ancient Wiccan artifact, a pendulum board, as they prepare to open a bistro in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Emily becomes obsessed with the board’s powers, exposing her to the ancient spirit of the Queen of Witches. Desperate to help his fiancé, Christian seeks the advice of occult expert Alexander Babtiste (Jamie Campbell Bower, Netflix’s Stranger Things, the TWILIGHT saga), but Babtiste has dark secrets of his own. Shot in Montreal by cinematographer Yaron Levy (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING). Also starring David La Haye (TRUE NORTH), Charlie Tahan (Netflix’s Ozark), Antonia Desplat (AppleTV+’s Shantaram), and Mel Jarnson (MORTAL KOMBAT). World Premiere.

SHELBY OAKS

Shelby Oaks

A woman’s desperate search for her long-lost sister, a famous YouTuber who investigated paranormal happenings, falls into obsession upon realizing that the imaginary demon from their childhood may have been real. After a successful Kickstarter campaign that broke records across the platform, the highly anticipated feature debut feature from YouTube creator Chris Stuckmann is finally here and ready to scare the pants off the world. SHELBY OAKS delivers in all departments. Starring Camille Sullivan (HUNTER HUNTER), Brendan Sexton III (DON’T BREATHE 2), Sarah Durn (RENFIELD), Keith David (THE THING, NOPE), and Michael Beach (AQUAMAN). Produced by Aaron B. Koontz, Cameron Burns, and Ashleigh Snead, and Executive Produced by Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy, among others. World Premiere.

INFINITE SUMMER

Infinite Summer

Estonia-based Miguel Llansó (CRUMBS, JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY) is a singular gift to cinema. Fantasia is proud to be bringing the visionary iconoclast back to Montreal for the World Premiere of what may be his most compelling creation yet: INFINITE SUMMER, a trippy transhumanist sci-fi exploration vibrant with humor, poignancy, and gonzo invention. On a summer break, Mia and her friends try a meditation app that that’s somehow related to the operating system of the Tallinn Zoo, changing in the body chemistry of its users into something between pollen and cosmic dust. Mia will need to choose between saving her friends or joining them.  An astonishing film, produced by legendary US producing partners Allison Rose Carter and Jon Read (EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, AMERICAN HONEY), Rain Rannu (CHASING UNICORNS, THE INVISIBLE FIGHT), and Tõnu Hiielaid (KRATT), and Llansó himself, starring Hannah Gross (Netflix’s Mindhunter), Johanna Rosin, and Teele Kaljuvee-O’Brock.  World Premiere.

CONFESSION

Confession

Every Winter since Sayuri’s tragic disappearance sixteen years ago, Asai and Jiyong climb the mountain where it happened to honor her memory. However, an intense blizzard and a catastrophic injury convince Jiyong he’s done for and, before forcing Asai to leave him to die, he shares a devastating revelation. Asai returns, however, after finding a nearby cabin and now, isolated for the night, the two have to deal with Jiyong’s not-so-last words… the hard way. Two award-winning Fantasia legends, director Nobuhiro Yamashita (LA LA LA AT ROCK BOTTOM) and actor/writer/director Yang Ik-june (BREATHLESS), along with superstar Toma Ikuta (THE MOLE SONG trilogy), team up to adapt a beloved manga into a narrative and technical achievement, one of the best single-location thrillers ever created. With stellar performances and masterful direction using every inch of his set to generate maximum tension, CONFESSION flirts with perfection at every level – and must be experienced in a theatre. North American Premiere.

RITA

RITA

Following up on the international success of his brilliant LA LLORONA (2019), director Jayro Bustamante’s RITA fuses mythical fantasy and whimsical imagery with themes of childhood innocence and the potent emotional register of a story based on a harrowing real life event, wherein 41 young women needlessly burned to death inside a Guatemalan orphanage in the midst of a protest about inhumane conditions. At its core is the powerful performance of Guiliana Santa Cruz, who speaks for all the young women who suffered. As a result, the story speaks much to the power of female anger, and yet, not once does the director lose sense of the fact that at its heart, Rita’s tale is one of girlhood, of dreams, of an innocence lost, and regained within the bosom of female solidarity. World Premiere.

THIS MAN

This Man

An inexplicable wave of tragic deaths plunges two investigators into the heart of a fateful whirlwind, where logic and facts have no value as a far-fetched urban legend seems to come true. A mother plagued by terrifying dreams, seeing her friends and colleagues disappear one after the other, and her family witness the horror unfold. Director and screenwriter Tomojiro Amano (TRAPPED IN MAKYO) skillfully fuses the styles of Eastern and Western classics, referencing RINGU, IT FOLLOWS, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET among others, to create an intimate, oppressive work that constantly keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as it slowly and subtly unveils the pandemic-like slaughter outside. At the crest of the international horror-film harvest of 2024, already a banner year, THIS MAN is sure to lodge itself in viewers’ memories. With such potential, a Hollywood remake wouldn’t be surprising. International Premiere.

DARK MATCH

Dark Match

After his success with the WOLF COP films, Canadian filmmaker Lowell Dean switches it up and takes horror to the ring! When small-time wrestlers get a big payday for a private gig, they jump at the chance for fame and fortune, but the event, run by a mysterious leader who calls himself “The Prophet,” demands plenty of blood on the mats and involves a sinister, demonic deal! Set in the wrestling heyday of the 80s, DARK MATCH is an action-packed rumble on the ropes shot by acclaimed cinematographer Karim Hussain (INFINITY POOL, POSSESSOR). Starring wrestling legend Chris Jericho as the charismatic leader of its bloodthirsty cult, Ayisha Issa (TRANSPLANT), and Steven Ogg (AMC’s The Walking Dead), you’ll get more than your share of intrigue, action, and gore inside this ring! Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

A SAMURAI IN TIME

A Samurai in Time

An Edo-period swordsman is flung into the future, arriving in modern Kyoto to confront utter confusion—and an acting career. The medieval warrior transported to modern times is a variant of the time-travel subgenre that has been explored many times around the world. Award-winning writer/director Junichi Yasuda (GOHAN), however, offers a take on the theme that’s not only clever, funny, and distinctly Japanese, but remarkably poignant. Shot on location at Toei Studios Kyoto, A SAMURAI IN TIME is held together by the subtle and convincing performance of lead actor Makiya Yamaguchi. More than just a fun fish-out-of-water fantasy, it’s an homage to samurai cinema as it wanes as surely as the shogunate once did. International Premiere.

THE DEAD THING

The Dead Thing

A young woman, lost in a series of meaningless connections through dating apps, falls in love with a charismatic man who is hiding a dark secret that turns her affair into a dangerous obsession. Smart, tragic and unsettling, Pure Cinema host Elric Kane’s first solo-directed feature is a character-driven supernatural nightmare that explores the demons of modern dating in ways that are both horrific and disturbingly relatable.  Swipe right on this profound piece of genre cinema that is destined to become a horror classic. Staring Blu Hunt (Netflix’s Another Life), Ben Smith-Petersen (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD), Katherine Hughes (ECHO 3), and John Karna (SCREAM). Co-Written by Webb Wilcoxen (The Frontier). Produced by Monte Yazzie, Matt Mercer (BLISS), and Rebekah McKendry (GLORIOUS). World Premiere.

MASH VILLE

Mash Ville

Someone has died after drinking the bootleg liquor brewed by Se-jong and his two younger brothers. While on a mission to retrieve their deadly booze before another person perishes from it, they come across two homicidal cultists who are terrorizing the villagers. The love that director Hwang Wook (LIVE HARD, DOG EAT DOG) harbors for the Western, action, and comedy genres shines through from start to finish with stylish cinematography, quirky characters, and an incredibly entertaining screenplay. Most importantly, pitch-black humor abounds. Hwang and company commit to their absurdity, and it’s an absolute blast, a genre-mashing crowd-pleaser sure to be a Korean cult classic as time goes on. World Premiere.

ELECTROPHILIA

Electrophilia

A woman wakes up from a coma six weeks after being struck by lightning and finds herself compulsively drawn to electric currents as her body’s workings begin to change. She soon joins an underground support group of strike survivors led by a dangerously charismatic doctor, opening a doorway into unexpected new explorations. A gripping, sensorial experience with a visceral emotional core, ELECTROPHILIA is the latest creation from Cannes-award-winning Argentinian filmmaker and novelist Lucía Puenzo (THE FISH CHILD, XXY). Reminiscent of CRASH-era Cronenberg, it is a subversive and beautiful genre work, a different kind of self-discovery tale, and a new breed of dramatic thriller. Starring Mariana Di Girolamo (Pablo Larrain’s EMA), German Palacios (EL RAPTO), and Guillermo Pfening (THE GERMAN DOCTOR). North American Premiere.

PENALTY LOOP

Penalty Loop

Left bereft by the wanton and inexplicable murder of his girlfriend, Jun chooses his own justice, carefully planning the perfect murder of the man who led him to become what he wants to eliminate. Once the vengeance is consummated, he wakes up with a confirmed sense of déjà-vu and his target alive and well, repeating the same routine as the day before. Offering a breathless, dark, and innovative variation on the time-loop concept, writer/director Shinji Araki (THE TOWN OF HEADCOUNTS) establishes himself as a sure thing in contemporary Japanese genre cinema with this unpredictable, shocking narrative that constantly twists and turns toward a conclusion that’s as satisfying as it is devastating. Carried by a convincing duo of actors in perfect sync, PENALTY LOOP is an accomplishment condemning Araki to return to the forefront with each of his future projects. North American Premiere.

HELL HOLE

Hell Hole

A road trip through Canadian oil fields conjured up fantasies of secrets deep in the dirt for the Adams family, and inspired them to create HELL HOLE, an indie rock-n-roll monster movie set at a far-away fracking site. Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew. Absurd, mutinous, and transgressively comical, Hell Hole is old-school sci-fi horror, yet in typical family fashion, they subvert the genre with textures of biological and environmental horror in tandem with questions of gender and bodily autonomy. This will be the fourth time that Fantasia World Premieres work from the gifted filmmaking family, following launches of THE DEEPER YOU DIG, HELLBENDER, and WHERE THE DEVIL ROAMS. World Premiere.

DEAD DEAD FULL DEAD

Dead Dead Full Dead

Junior police officers Balraam and Zubeida make a cute couple, but not the most diligent detectives. Called to a posh apartment tower to investigate a reported murder, the seemingly straightforward case quickly becomes a conundrum that would confuse even Sherlock Holmes. When the victim herself returns from the afterlife, matters become even more muddled, and soon enough the question isn’t who killed her… but who didn’t?! With the deadpan delirium of his debut feature, Mumbai-based editor and filmmaker Pratul Gaikwad offers a very odd, otherworldly mutation on the much-loved mystery-comedy genre. Featuring paranormal powers and multiple manias, cosmic wonders and covert class warfare, celestial bureaucracy and dysfunctional love, and even a supernaturally transformed goat, Gaikwad’s surreal whodunit offers a bit of everything… except perhaps proper law-enforcement procedure. World Premiere.

VOIVOD: WE ARE CONNECTED

Voivod

From the moment they exploded out of Jonquière in the early ‘80s, Voivod have been widely hailed as one of the most original and influential metal bands in the world. Years in the making and produced with full access to the band’s archives, Felipe Belalcazar’s illuminating VOIVOD: WE ARE CONNECTED brings the story of a groundbreaking 40+ year career to the screen with energy, insight, and a palpable sense of love. The long-awaited doc will be launched in the very province that birthed the band and Fantasia couldn’t be more proud. With appearances by Tobias Forge (Ghost), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Jason Newsted (Metallica – and brief Voivod member), Zach Blair (Rise Against, GWAR), Tom G Warrior (Celtic Frost, Triptykon), and Ivan Doroschuk (Men Without Hats), among many others. Docs from the Edge section. World Premiere.

FLY ME TO THE SAITAMA: FROM BIWA LAKE WITH LOVE

Fly Me to the Saitama

After stealing hearts at Fantasia 2019, where FLY ME TO THE SAITAMA won the Audience Award for Best Asian Feature, director Hideki Takeuchi returns to a fantastical version of Japan—“definitely not a portrayal of any actual place”—with a completely original story independent from the ’80s manga from which it takes its name. Japanese music superstar Gackt and co-star Fumi Nikaido are back as Rei and Momomi in FROM BIWA LAKE WITH LOVE, now supported by an equally delightful cast of new characters as they crank up the genre-bending, highly stylized shenanigans that made the first film so unforgettable. Complete with a boys-love triangle, hilarious parodic references including a wacky Willy Wonka number, and the return of its meta story-within-a-story structure, this sequel is a worthy continuation with even more to offer! North American Premiere.

HUNTING DAZE

Hunting Daze

Lauded following its premiere at SXSW, Annick Blanc’s highly anticipated debut feature finally makes its way home. HUNTING DAZE takes us on a wild trip, following Nina’s (Nahéma Ricci, ANTIGONE) journey as she takes refuge with a rowdy group of men after being stranded in a northern forest. The film plays like a drunken fever dream, exposing a microcosm of masculinity in which one’s desire to belong threatens to upend the group. With dreamy visuals and transfixing performances by a cast of Quebec talent (Marc Beaupré, Alexandre Landry, Bruno Marcil), this is a bachelor weekend unlike any you’ve ever seen. Canadian Premiere.

A second wave of Fantasia 2024 titles will be announced in early June with the festival’s full lineup to be revealed in early July. Ticket sales will commence shortly afterward.

After breaking records and raising over $1 million on Kickstarter, YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann is making his feature directorial debut with horror movie Shelby Oaks, which we haven’t heard any updates on for a bit now. Today brings a pretty exciting one, however.

Deadline reports that horror master Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, “The Fall of the House of Usher”) has come on board the upcoming Shelby Oaks as an executive producer. Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures have joined the team.

Shelby Oaks is currently in post-production, so we expect to hear more soon.

“Intrepid’s films and TV shows have inspired me for years, and it’s a dream come true to work with Mike and Trevor on my first feature,” said Stuckmann. “I’m ecstatic beyond words to partner on the release of Shelby Oaks.”

“For a film that had such a hard time getting going, it’s remarkable the doors that then opened to us,” said Paper Street Pictures producer Aaron B. Koontz. “The success of our Kickstarter followed by the on-going leadership and guidance from Mike, Trevor, and Melinda is beyond anything I could have hoped for.”

Stuckmann wrote and will be directing Shelby Oaks for Paper Street Pictures.

The biggest question of the new year is whether horror can continue the tremendous hot streak unleashed in 2022. The good news is that, so far, all signs point to yes!

From new adaptations to hotly anticipated sequels, indie darlings, and much more, 2023’s list of horror movies looks incredibly stacked with great offerings.

We’re excited to check out these 35 horror movies in 2023, but perhaps even more excited knowing that this list is only a fraction of what’s in store….

M3GAN – January 6

(from left) M3GAN and Cady (Violet McGraw) in M3GAN, directed by Gerard Johnstone.

Get Out’s Allison Williams combats a state-of-the-art A.I. doll in this horror movie directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2) and based on a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan.

Candy Land – January 6

This slasher movie written and directed by John Swab (Ida Red) follows “Remy (Olivia Luccardi), a seemingly naïve and devout young woman who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself in the underground world of truck stop sex workers, a.k.a. “lot lizards,” courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin), Riley (Eden Brolin), Liv (Virginia Rand), and Levi (Owen Campbell).”

Skinamarink – January 13

The viral horror hit arrives in theaters soon. It follows two kids that wake to find their father gone, so they create a slumber party and play old videotapes to cope. But it soon becomes clear that something is watching them…

There’s Something Wrong with the Children – January 17

Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S, Southbound) directs this EPIX release that sees a getaway between friends go horrifically awry when a supernatural occurrence leaves the kids behaving strangely. It stars Zach Gilford (The Purge: Anarchy, “Midnight Mass”), Amanda Crew (“Silicon Valley”), Alisha Wainwright, Carlos Santos, Briella Guiza, and David Mattle.

Kids vs. Aliens – January 20

RLJE and Bloody Disgusting's Kids vs. Aliens

Director Jason Eisener (“Treevenge,” Hobo with a Shotgun, V/H/S/2, and Vice T.V.’s hit “Dark Side of the Ring”) is back next year with the horror/sci-fi movie Kids vs. Aliens. When siblings are left alone on Halloween weekend, a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the kids to band together to survive the night.

Infinity Pool – January 27

A still from Infinity Pool by Brandon Cronenberg, an official selection of the Midnight section at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates awaits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise. Brandon Cronenberg’s follow-up to Possessor will star Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth.

Knock at the Cabin – February 3

From left: Dave Bautista, Abby Quinn, and Nikki Amuka-Bird in KNOCK AT THE CABIN, directed and co-written by M. Night Shyamalan

Up next from M. Night Shyamalan is the Paul Tremblay adaptation Knock at the Cabin, which sees a family held hostage and forced to make impossible choices to avert the apocalypse. It’s the first R-rated movie by Shyamalan since The Happening.

Cocaine Bear – February 24

Cocaine Bear trailer

Don’t coke the bear. The Elizabeth Banks-helmed movie is inspired by true events in Kentucky in 1985, and Jimmy Warden wrote it. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) produced. Expect things to get violent and hilarious.

The Outwaters – February TBD

‘The Outwaters’ Panic Fest Review – A Singular, Experimental Descent Into Depravity and Gory Chaos!
‘The Outwaters’ Panic Fest Review – A Singular, Experimental Descent Into Depravity and Gory Chaos!

Despite a familiar initial setup, there’s nothing conventional about found footage nightmare The Outwaters. Nothing will prepare you for the disturbing journey writer/director Robbie Banfitch has in store, either. Banfitch mercilessly lulls viewers with a soothing intro before ripping open a dark abyss beneath them, flinging them into an immersive pit of visceral madness. Look for this one to arrive in theaters before landing exclusively on SCREAMBOX.

Scream VI – March 10

Scream VI teaser

With nearly 2 million subscribers, Chris Stuckmann is one of the most popular movie critics on YouTube, and one of his next videos will be a feature length horror movie of his own.

Announced by Deadline today, Stuckmann is on board to direct a horror movie titled Shelby Oaks for Paper Street Pictures (The Pale Door), a film he’ll also be writing the script for.

“The project will chart the story of a fictional mid-2000’s U.S. paranormal investigative team called The Paranormal Paranoids. Multiple found footage videos have surfaced online in recent months which have prompted horror and ARG (Alternate Reality Game) fans to speculate about the veracity of the case and the whereabouts of the investigators. One video uploaded last week appeared to show the abduction of one of the group, known as Riley.”

Aaron Koontz, Cameron Burns and Ashleigh Snead are producing for Paper Street.

Stuckmann said in a statement, “It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to finally get a film off the ground and when Aaron [Koontz] and I began discussing the potential of this story we immediately jumped at it. There is a reason so many of my fellow YouTubers are talking about this. Shelby Oaks is going to be something fresh yet deeply unnerving.”

Deadline also notes that Stuckmann has “multiple horror scripts in the works.”
