NBC Rebooting “Xena: Warrior Princess” as New Series

Major breaking news as NBC’s planning a remake of popular syndicated action adventure series “Xena: Warrior Princess.”

“Lost” alum Javier Grillo-Marxuach has been tapped to pen the project, which he will executive produce with the original series’ executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, says Deadline.

Raimi had recently said that working on “Xena” was the best time he ever had working in Hollywood, so this comes as little surprise.

So far, there is no involvement by Lucy Lawless, who toplined the 1990s series, though NBC brass had been open to having her on board in some capacity, adds the site.

This past July, Lawless had revealed she had pitched a television movie, and even talked about using a crowd-sourcing platform to make it happen. With NBC now behind it, it looks like Lawless can just hop on the phone with Tapert and Raimi, who cast her in his ongoing Starz series “Ash vs Evil Dead,” and ask for a job. I think it’s safe to say Lawless will return.

Grillo-Marxuach recently worked as co-executive producer on Syfy’s “Helix.”
