The legal battle between Sean Cunningham & Horror Inc. and screenwriter Victor Miller over the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise continues to be a total nightmare, with the most recent update coming earlier this month. To make a long story short, Cunningham & Horror Inc. have taken the case to the Second Circuit, and it could be *years* before anything is resolved.
Sadly, the battle has put a halt not only on the Friday the 13th films, but it has also stopped production on Friday the 13th: The Game. And now it’s impacting merchandise too.
As reported by our friends over at Fridaythe13thFranchise.com, NECA‘s creative director Randy Faulk noted during a fan event over the weekend that their license has been suspended.
“Faulk mentioned the license has been suspended for the foreseeable future because of the rights battle. Only in-development product will still be released,” the site reports.
In other words, Friday the 13th figures that NECA has already shown off (like Ultimate Roy Burns, pictured below) will still be released, but nothing else is coming until all the smoke clears on the legal battle. Presumably, this is now impacting not just NECA but any and all companies who have the Friday the 13th license, which is more real bad news for fans.
At the moment, it seems there’s no end in sight for this one. Sigh.
