You can learn more about “Z Nation” over at Syfy.
You’re entering the third season of “Z Nation”. What should fans expect?
This season really goes off the rails. When the show started, survival was the driving story, but now that they survived, anything goes! I’m excited for fans to see everything our team is throwing at them this season.
With each new season, what challenges do you face with scoring?
It’s easy to forget to inject real melody into the score sometimes. With all the darkness, killing, and action, a heavy drone and huge drums becomes the backbone to so much of the score. I cherish the moments that breathe and allow me to set the tone for the scene.
What is the strangest instrument or tone you’ve used for the show?
I learned how to play a mouth harp last season. That’s the little metal instrument that’s the twang sound in bluegrass or southern music. The episode on the Mississippi River just felt like the right place, and I love learning a new instrument, however amateur I am at it!
What has been your favorite death, musically, to score during the first 2 seasons?
I remember Garnett’s death being the first emotional death to score, and I really love the resonator guitar I played on that. Mack’s death in season 2 was especially creepy, with some heavenly piano cutting through a bowed electric guitar drone. It was pretty cool when it all came together.
Who is your favorite character to score and why?
This season it’s Warren. She is always giving these pep talks and speeches that keep our gang driving forward, and usually the score has a little military tone to it, while being emotional and inspirational.
