A few different filmmakers and studios over the years have set out to adapt Isaac Asimov’s trilogy of sci-fi novels collectively known as The Foundation Trilogy, but Deadline reports that it’s Apple who will be bringing the novels to the small screen.
The project, from Skydance Television, has been put in development for straight-to-series consideration. David Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) will be executive producers and serve as showrunners.
“Originally published as a short story series in Astounding Magazine in 1942, Asimov’s Foundation is the complex saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy, all living under the rule of the Galactic Empire. The protagonist is a psycho-historian who has an ability to read the future and foresees the empire’s imminent collapse. He sets out to save the knowledge of mankind from being wiped out.”
Previous attempts to adapt the novels in the form of a feature film have failed, so it would seem that a TV series adaptation is the best approach for the epic material.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross also will executive produce.
