Shudder Announces Joe Bob Briggs Holiday Specials for This Year and Ongoing Series in 2019!

Back in July, Shudder brought iconic horror host Joe Bob Briggs back to television with the 24-hour “Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs,” which was so successful it damn near broke the internet. They promised that Joe Bob would be back for more, and indeed he will be!

First up, Shudder will bring back the iconic horror host for Thanksgiving and Christmas specials, to be titled “The Dinners of Death” and “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.”

Additionally, a full-on, ongoing regular series is set for 2019!

The response to our first marathon was overwhelming, and we can’t think of a better gift for our members than to bring Joe Bob back for the holidays,” said Shudder GM Craig Engler. “We’ve been hard at work with Joe Bob and his team to make these new marathons unforgettable events, and we have even bigger plans for 2019.”

Joe Bob Briggs adds, “In November we’re turning Black Friday into Red Thursday with the best deadly-dinner movies in history, and in December we have a very special way to fill that void felt by American households ever since ABC stopped airing the ‘Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey’ Claymation special.”

“The Dinners of Death” is scheduled to air on Thursday, Nov. 22, followed by “A Very Joe Bob Christmas” on Friday, Dec. 21. Both marathons will be streamed live and feature films hand-picked by Joe Bob himself, with special guest stars and Joe Bob’s signature brand of Drive-In deep-dives and commentary.

Details for the Joe Bob series will be announced in early 2019. Both the marathons and the series will be produced by Matt Manjourides and Justin Martell and directed by Austin Jennings.

“Lovecraft Country” Will Not Return to HBO for a Second Season

In many ways, Misha Green‘s HBO series “Lovecraft Country” was already a departure from Matt Ruff’s source material, adapting most of the storylines present in the book but offering a new perspective, new resonance, and a bold new approach to the novel. If there was to be a second season, well, Green and the team would be heading into uncharted waters entirely.

Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen. Deadline reports tonight that HBO has made the decision to not renew “Lovecraft Country” for a second season. And that’s that.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

Deadline also explains, “Helped by strong word of mouth, the series, starring Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, grew its fan base, with the Season 1 finale hitting a series high audience on HBO (1.5 million) and becoming the most watched new episode of an original series on HBO Max in its first day of availability. By the time the finale was released in October, the premiere episode had crossed the 10M viewers mark.”

The debut season of “Lovecraft Country” ended with major deaths and the supernatural banning of white people from ever using magic again, bringing closure to the storyline and suggesting a better future for the surviving characters. Green had recently told Deadline, “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of.”
