It’s hard to believe that today marks the 14th(!) anniversary of the early-millennium horror remake, House of Wax. When the film first melted into theaters back in 2005, it was immediately bashed by fans and critics alike. But it seems now, nearly 15 years later, fans are giving the film the recognition it deserves.
Our very own Trace Thurman even revisited the flick a few years back, defending its place as one of the standout remakes from that very crowded era. With solid kills, grand set design, and a nostalgic soundtrack (which is now available on vinyl, so you can spin “Spitfire” to your heart’s content), House of Wax deserves a little love.
While you probably remember the movie, you may be surprised to learn that MTV released a reality show based on the making of the film–yes you heard me correctly. Titled Movie Life: House of Wax, the five episode mini-series, which originally aired in the weeks leading up to the film’s theatrical release, followed all the behind-the-scenes drama. And, oh boy, the drama is there–from Paris Hilton‘s diva moment before filming her first big scene, to the entire set burning down in an uncontrollable fire mid-production; the movie sure had its fair share of mishaps.
Even better? You can watch the series in its entirety on YouTube! The quality of the video isn’t the greatest–and it makes me hope that the full series will one day become a killer extra on a collector’s edition Blu-ray (I’m looking at you, Scream Factory), but until that day comes, the YouTube version makes for an enjoyable two-hour binge.
The show also manages to give a rather in-depth look into the actual production of the $40 million Warner Bros. picture. Pulling the curtain back on pre-production costume fittings, constructing the insanely detailed museum set, creating the special effects, and even designing the theatrical poster. It’s fascinating to see all the elements come together.
In typical MTV fashion, we are naturally treated to our fair share of reality show gab. Paris Hilton prepares to release her debut album and makes a surprise visit to a fan’s birthday party. Chad Michael Murray proposes to his then-girlfriend and One Tree Hill co-star, Sophia Bush. And a pre-Supernatural Jared Padalecki is googly-eyed over his blonde bombshell co-star. It’s pure early-aughts goodness.
