Netflix Pulls the Plug on ‘Carrie’-Esque Series “I Am Not Okay With This” After Just One Season

Released onto Netflix back in February, the short-and-sweet debut season of the Sophia Lillis-starring I Am Not Okay With This won over many of us here on Bloody Disgusting, including yours truly and our head critic Meagan Navarro, but we’ve learned the bummer news today that Netflix is not proceeding with a second season of the coming-of-age series.

First reported by Deadline, I Am Not Okay With This has been cancelled.

“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline. According to the site, the plan was for the series to get a second season in pre-COVID times, with scripts already being worked on.

Another big time bummer here is that the first season’s finale left us with the tease of an even wilder second season that we couldn’t wait to dive into. As Meagan had noted in her four-star review, “The closing moments make it abundantly clear there’s much more of Syd’s story left to tell, with the promise of something much darker and bloodier ahead.”

Alas, Syd’s story will instead remain frustratingly unfinished.

“I Am Not Okay With This” was an irreverent origin story that followed a teenage girl (Lillis) who was navigating the trials and tribulations of high school, all while dealing with the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her.

The series also starred Wyatt Oleff (ItGuardians of the Galaxy) as “Stanley Barber”, Sofia Bryant (“The Code”) as “Dina”, Kathleen Rose Perkins (““You’re The Worst”) as “Maggie”, Aidan Wojtak-Hissong as “Liam” and Richard Ellis as “Brad Lewis”. It was based on Charles Forsman‘s comic, developed by Jonathan Entwistle and Christy Hall.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.
