Nightmares and Daydreams

Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore), known internationally for stylish and gory horror, has a supernatural thriller series on the way for Netflix. Anwar recently teased a first look at upcoming series “Nightmares & Daydreams” via Twitter.

Netflix describes “Nightmares & Daydreams” as “a supernatural thriller series that shows there isn’t necessarily a rational explanation behind every occurrence.”

Here’s the full official synopsis: “A sci-fi supernatural series about ordinary people encountering strange phenomena that may be keys to the answer about the origin of our world and the imminent threat we will soon face. Characters and plots will intertwine like pieces of a puzzle. And the big picture will be awe-inspiring.”

Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, Yoga Pratama, Fachri Albar, Marissa Anita, and Sita Nursanti star.

Between Anwar’s body of horror works so far and the ominous first look image, above and below, the series is already shaping up to be a creepy one.

The series was initially announced in 2022 by Deadline as part of a huge slate of Indonesian projects that included several new series and movies from renowned Indonesian filmmakers, including Joko Anwar. The outlet reported to expect “Nightmares & Daydreams” to follow multiple storylines that would see ordinary people encountering strange, eerie phenomena.

“Indonesia is so full of unique and extraordinary stories. I’m always excited to have the chance to bring these stories to a wider audience,” Anwar told Deadline at the time of the announcement.

“Nightmares & Daydreams” isn’t the only horror offering in the pipeline from Anwar; expect to hear more soon about Siksa Kubur (Grave Torture), an upcoming horror film written and directed by Joko Anwar from the production house Come and See Pictures. The film is a feature length adaptation of the 2012 short film, available to watch now on Anwar’s YouTube channel.

Joko Anwar’s most recent release stateside was 2022’s Satan’s Slaves: Communion, which debuted on Shudder.

“For at least the last half decade, Joko Anwar has been directing some of the best horror movies in the world. The original Satan’s Slaves is widely lauded as one of the scariest movies in Shudder history, so we’re beyond thrilled to have Joko back with a sequel that more than lives up to the original. We can’t wait for our members to see how this terrifying story plays out,” said Shudder general manager Craig Engler for the film’s U.S. release. All of which to say that it feels like a safe bet that the filmmaker’s upcoming series will go for the jugular.

Of course, there’s no current release date set as of yet for “Nightmares & Daydreams”, but filmmaker Joko Anwar teases that it’s coming soon.

I'm the Grim Reaper

The Wattpad/Webtoons and Grave Weaver-created series “I’m the Grim Reaper” is nearing its 200th episode, and it’s also getting a new TV series adaptation with talented names behind it. Deadline reports that celebrated filmmaker Sam Raimi is teaming up with 10 Cloverfield Lane scribes Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken on the new series.

The series follows “Scarlet, a young woman who wakes up in the ninth circle of hell with no idea how she got there. Satan offers to send Scarlet back to Earth if she’ll work as his reaper. But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared.”

The story is said to fit perfectly into “Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.”

Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi will executive produce the series with Weaver, who’ll also team on the development process. Raimi may be most known for his Spider-Man and Evil Dead movies, but the filmmaker has been busy behind the scenes producing. More recently, Raimi produced this week’s action brawler Boy Kills World and last year’s 65, with Don’t Move on the way.

The “I’m the Grim Reaper” webtoon launched in 2019, delving into the humor and horrors of reaping souls in Hell. That it’s on the cusp of airing its 200th episode means no shortage of story and mythology for Campbell and Stuecken to pull from.

Stay tuned for additional details on this new series as they arrive.
